Science: Lets Start with Questions

Science: Lets Start with Questions

Although not an expert in science education, I am passionate about improving the way all subjects are taught in schools today. Science has been rejuvenated in some way through an increased focus on STEM/STEAM but I wanted to share some insights into the state of science education in schools and the steps that I believe can be taken to improve it.

Science education is crucial in today's fast-changing world, and with advancements in technology, it has never been more critical. We depend epistemically on the skills of scientists, just as we do on plumbers and doctors. Our scientific understanding of the world is one of humanity's greatest intellectual achievements, and it is crucial that we communicate the achievements of leaders in the field to more people.

One of the biggest problems with teaching science in schools is that it starts from the wrong place. Education must start from the point of view of questions about the world. Most textbooks tell students the facts, but not what they are answering. A more innovative approach to science education that emphasizes critical thinking, exploration, and a sense of wonder is needed.

Science education should take into account the "wow" factor, and students should be presented with complex information to understand how convulsive reality is. They should be taught to explore the nature of uncertainty and theorize, rather than simply providing an answer. This approach will teach students to always check their sources and trust science.

One of the biggest challenges facing science education is the decline in interest that people display in the sciences as they grow older. Students lose interest when science is presented as a bunch of fixed, established facts on which one can have no influence or opinion. Science education needs to offer students something impressive, wonder and connections.

Improving science education in schools is essential, and it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that it is done. A more innovative approach to science education is needed, one that emphasizes critical thinking, exploration, and a sense of wonder. By doing this, we can prepare our students for a future where scientific knowledge and skills are essential. We need to be advocating for improved science education in international schools and ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn and thrive in this important field.
