Science Needs a Place to Call Home

Science Needs a Place to Call Home

As many of you might know, the world’s largest biotechnology conference landed in Boston this past week. BIO International usually sees over 14,000 biotechnology and pharmaceutical leaders gather for a week of intense networking to discover new opportunities and promising partnerships.

While the majority of the content revolves around research, discovery, and pharmaceuticals, interestingly enough, the topic that has grown steadily over the years is real estate and construction.

A search of the keywords construction, real estate, development, and property management on the BIO website reveals over 20 companies exhibiting at the conference, not to mention the numerous more attending and networking.

BIO provides developers and owners of life science facilities and parks to market their state-of-the-art facilities to biotech’s elite, and you can usually find a large contingent of those companies taking large swaths of space on the exhibit's floor to showcase their properties.

The conference is also a prime opportunity for municipal and academic owners to show the real estate developers and life science companies why their locales are perfect for large laboratory facilities. The key selling points usually include access to intellectual capital, a strong workforce, and tax incentives.

So, next time you read or see something about BIO International besides the science, it could mean a new shovel is hitting the ground soon.
