Scoffers

Scoffers

In contrasting the righteous with scoffers, the arrogant, and boastful mockers of the truth, Psalm 1:1-6 declares;

"How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish."

In the end, the arrogant scoffers of God and His servants will be destroyed. The righteous will be the ones that stand firm in the coming judgment of the Lord. They will continue abiding in Him, not falling away in unbelief and rebellion in the last days.

Regarding the fate of the wicked, the prophet Isaiah declares;

"For the ruthless will come to an end, and the scorner will be finished, indeed all who are intent on doing evil will be cut off [see Romans 11:22]; who cause a person to be indicted by a word, and ensnare him who adjudicates at the gate, and defraud the one in the right with meaningless arguments." (Isaiah 29:20-21/NAS)

Proverbs 19:29 says; "Judgments are prepared for scoffers, and blows for the back of fools." All the boastful mockers of God and His people will soon come to a sudden and terrifying end. Proverbs 15:12 says; "A scoffer does not love one who reproves him, He will not go to the wise."

Recently, on Facebook, I posted a thought on the horrific judgments that are coming to our land, capitalizing the word “HORRIFIC.” A scoffer of God responded; “Let me know when the HORRIFIC events happen in this land.” Unfortunately, I won’t have to let him know, he will behold it firsthand.

I hear the word of the Lord for our day through Isaiah 28:22 which declares;

"And now do not carry on as scoffers, lest your fetters [“bonds”] be made stronger; for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts, of decisive destruction [“complete destruction, consumption, annihilation”] on all the earth."

The Hebrew for “fetters” is mowcer [mo-sare'] which is defined as “a band, a bond.” It’s taken from a word that means “to discipline; to chastise, literally with blows or figuratively with words.” Each word spoken in mockery against the Lord only serves to bind the foolish tighter, ensuring their complete, decisive destruction.

In his description of the scoffers of the last days, Peter says;

"First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men." (2 Peter 3:3-7/NIV)

Scoffers, those who by definition “jeer at and trifle with” God, will be destroyed by the cleansing deluge of His judgment on earth at the end of this age. This is what Isaiah refers to as the “overwhelming scourge” that will terrorize those who have made falsehood their refuge, having concealed themselves with a cloak of deception (Isaiah 28:14-19). You will not be able to hide from His scourging hand of judgment. The torrent that is coming will overcome the entire earth, destroying all scoffers of God.

Like Peter, Jude also refers to the scoffers of the last days, saying;

"But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” These are the men who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit." (Jude 1:17-19/NIV)

A divisive spirit is one that disjoins, causing divisions or separations. One look at the numerous denominations in the church tells you how successful up until now this spirit has been. Thankfully, by God’s mercy and for His name’s sake, things are about to change...
