SEAI October Update

In this edition, we share the latest findings from our National Energy Balance report published recently. Our 'Stat of the Month' highlights how Ireland’s road transport emissions are still increasing and we to act now by looking at alternate modes of transport.

October Stat of the Month - Transport emissions on the rise

SEAI hosts Decarbonising Transport Conference

SEAI held a conference to showcase measures to decarbonise industry fleets to meet transport targets on Thursday, October 12th.

  • Transport emissions account for one third of Ireland’s total energy related CO2 emissions and unfortunately, they have been increasing in the past two years following the lifting of covid restrictions.
  • Transport in the public sector accounts for 26% of the total energy related greenhouse gas emissions from the sector.
  • Almost half of total transport emissions in 2022 can be attributed to the business and public sectors.

Ireland’s total energy demand increased by almost 5% in 2022

We published the Final Energy Balance for 2022 which shows that Ireland’s total energy demand increased by almost 5% last year. The increase was mostly driven by a continued rebound of transport activity post COVID. A more significant increase was avoided through a reduction in household heating demand. SEAI believes that the 12% reduction in energy demand in the residential sector is due to a combination of high energy prices, the post COVID return to office, home efficiency improvements, a switch to renewables and some weather effects.

The annual National Energy Research and Policy Conference took place on the 14th September; facilitating discussion on the role of energy research and policy in achieving Ireland’s long term clean energy goals. The recordings, presentations and Q&A documents from each session are now available to download from the SEAI website.

Case Study: Clew Bay Hotel

To achieve their long-term goal of becoming ‘Carbon Neutral’, the management team at Clew Bay Hotel, Westport, knew they needed external advice on what energy efficiency measures they needed to take to excel their pace. They applied to SEAI for a €2,000 voucher towards the cost of a professional energy audit.

Just to let you know, the Clew Bay Hotel is in Westport, not Wexford 😉 Great to see business, communities and individuals taking on the challenge and making change.
