Throughout my career, I've witnessed first-hand the transformation of the compressor sector. Historically, the focus was mainly on performance and reliability. Today, the narrative has shifted to include sustainability as a third, equally important pillar. This shift is crucial, not just from an environmental standpoint, but also because regulatory bodies can fine those companies that fail to implement measures to address these issues. Therefore, this evolution reflects a broader industry trend towards integrating environmental considerations into the core of operational strategies, highlighting the imperative to adapt not only for the planet but to meet legal and social obligations.

With the increasing regulations against practices such as gas-flaring, the role of compressors has evolved significantly. They are now tasked with reintegrating this gas back into the upstream fuel network. However, fugitive gases such as methane can still be an issue, especially from areas like the piston rod packing. Traditional methods to detect these leakages, while necessary, are no longer adequate on their own.

Rooting out emissions: The path to cleaner compression

The whole industry urgently needs innovative approaches that can proactively identify and precisely address leaks and minimize these fugitive emissions. Such advancements in technology and methodology are now emerging, designed to tackle emissions at their source and align operational practices with the demands of environmental sustainability. Programs such as BC ACTIVATE, seek out the root cause of emissions and these new strategies ensure solutions are both effective and durable, steering the industry towards a future where compliance and performance can go hand in hand.

Embracing these innovative solutions is not merely a response to immediate challenges, but a step towards redefining what it means to operate sustainably in the compressor industry.
