Sealing Solutions for Concentrated Solar Plants

PGE continues its focus on offering Solutions for Green Energy and Sustainable Sealing Solutions.

We partner with component manufacturers, Valve OEMs, Equipment that focus on the future of Solar farms with the more efficient Concentrated Solar Panels.

Molten Salts

In concentrated solar power (CSP) plants, molten salts are often used as a heat transfer fluid and as a means of storing thermal energy.  Sealing systems in these plants are crucial to prevent leaks, maintain system integrity, and ensure efficient operation.

Several sealing considerations must be taken into account:

  1. Temperature Resistance: Molten salts in CSP systems can reach high temperatures, typically in the range of 250 to 600 degrees C.  Due to the high temp, Graphite is not a recommended material for this seal.
  2. Chemical Compatibility: Molten salts used in CSP plants are usually a mixture of different salts. The sealing materials must be chemically compatible with these salts to prevent corrosion or chemical reactions that could compromise the integrity of the seals. Due to the caustic nature, Graphite is not a recommended material for this seal.
  3. Pressure Resistance: CSP systems operate under pressure, and the sealing systems must be designed to withstand the pressure conditions within the system. This is especially important in the pipes and valves where molten salts circulate.
  4. Thermal Cycling: CSP systems undergo frequent thermal cycling as they are exposed to sunlight during the day and may cool down at night. Sealing materials must be able to handle these thermal cycles without becoming brittle or losing their sealing properties.
  5.  Abrasion Resistance: Molten salts can be abrasive, especially when they are used as a heat transfer fluid. Sealing materials must be resistant to wear and abrasion over time.
  6. Compatibility with System Components: Sealing materials should be compatible with other materials used in the CSP system, such as metals and ceramics, to ensure a reliable and long-lasting seal.
  7. Long-Term Durability: Given the harsh conditions of CSP systems, sealing materials must have long-term durability to minimize maintenance requirements and ensure the plant's reliable operation over an extended lifespan.

Great products related to CSPs. Most of the CSP’s Solar Pannels are in parabolic shape and Swiveling as per Sun’s Direction. The center tube of such panel is also rotating. This tube is handling molten salt and or thermic fluids which needs Dynamic Sealing. As such it’s critical application for Sealing… Best Regards..
