The Seashell Crisis in Costa Rica 🌊

The Seashell Crisis in Costa Rica 🌊

Hello Ocean Advocates!

I hope this email finds you well! I'm excited to share our latest episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, where we dive into a pressing environmental issue that many may not be aware of—the seashell crisis in Costa Rica

In this episode, we explore how the removal of seashells from Costa Rica's beautiful beaches is not just a harmless souvenir habit but a practice that is destabilizing the coastline, accelerating erosion, and harming marine ecosystems. With tourism driving this alarming trend, we discuss the vital role seashells play in maintaining beach structure and supporting marine biodiversity, including species like hermit crabs and coral reefs.

You'll hear about:

  • The impact of seashell removal on local ecosystems and communities
  • How ocean acidification is exacerbated by this crisis.
  • Innovative solutions being developed, including the use of AI technology to classify and return confiscated seashells to their natural habitats.

As travelers, it's essential to reflect on our impact and consider how we can enjoy these beautiful places without leaving a negative imprint. I share a personal story from my travels that highlights the importance of sustainable tourism and respecting local wildlife.

Join me in this important conversation and learn how we can all contribute to preserving the ocean's health.

Great topic to cover - it sure seems harmless to pocket a few shells on a beach walk but it adds up when multipled by thousands of visitors. Worst of all is the shell trade - marketing shells and dried starfish, urchins, seahorses and corals to tourists/collectors. Shells for these markets are collected live to optimize their colors. Put on a mask and snorkel and enjoy shells in their habitats
