The Secret to Finding People to Talk to About Your Product Pre-Launch: 7 Unconventional Tips

As a startup studio, we're frequently asked how to find people to talk to about pre-launch products. This can be a challenge, especially for first-time founders who are just getting started. Fear not! We've been there, done that, and have some unconventional and creative solutions to share. Whether you're looking to network, get feedback, or simply generate some buzz, these tips will help you find the right people to talk to about your product. So grab a coffee and let's dive in!

1. Be a Walking Billboard: Wearing branded merchandise can be an easy way for even introverts to start conversations and generate product interest. Consider creating t-shirts, hats, or other items with your company's logo and wearing them out in public. Not only will you look stylish and professional, but you'll also be a walking billboard for your product. People will naturally be curious and ask about your company, giving you the perfect opportunity to share your excitement and get them talking. Just make sure to have plenty of business cards or flyers on hand to give out to anyone who shows an interest (or better yet- more branded merch to share!)

2. Utilize Online Communities: There are countless online communities dedicated to specific industries or topics. Join these communities and participate in discussions, offering valuable insights and perspectives. Just be sure to read the community rules and guidelines before jumping in, and avoid spamming the group with too many pitches. Joining these communities is akin to walking into a crowded room. You want to make sure that you dress appropriately, introduce yourself, and start a conversation in a polite and respectful manner. That way, you can make a great first impression and establish meaningful relationships that can benefit you in the long run. Not only will you build your network and reputation, but you might also get some valuable feedback on your product.

3. Collaborate with Other Startups: Collaborating with other startups can be a helpful way to get your product in front of wider audiences and build relationships with like-minded entrepreneurs. Think about working with other startups that are similar to yours to host events, run promotions, or just share each other's content. Not only will you get valuable exposure, but you might also make some valuable connections and friends in the process.

4. Crowdsource Feedback: Crowdsourcing is a convenient way to get feedback on your product from a wide range of people. This feedback can be invaluable in helping you make improvements and build the most effective product possible. Consider setting up a survey or creating a landing page where people can sign up to test your product and provide feedback. Not only will you get valuable insights, but you'll also build a list of potential customers and fans who are interested in your product.

5. Start a "Bring Your Product to Life" Group: What's better than finding one person to talk to about your product? Finding a whole group of people! Start a "Bring Your Product to Life" group and invite anyone and everyone who has an idea for a product. Not only will you have a captive audience to pitch your product to, but you'll also get some insightful feedback and maybe even connect with a potential co-founder. This is akin to fishing in a stocked pond - you already know the catch is going to be plentiful, so there's no need to waste time searching for the perfect spot. You can just cast your line and start reeling in the fish (or, in this case, customers and collaborators).

6. Talk to Strangers in Your Everyday Places: You never know who you might meet in the places you frequent. So why not take advantage of that? Strike up conversations with people at your local coffee shop, gym, or salon and share your excitement about your product. You might be surprised at how many people are interested in what you're working on, and you never know who might turn out to be a valuable connection. Just be mindful of the situation and avoid pitching your product to everyone you meet. Sometimes a simple conversation can go a long way.

7.  Network at Niche Industry Conferences: Attending industry conferences is a great way to meet people who are passionate about the same things as you. Rather than hitting up all the startup conferences, look for conferences in your product's niche. For example, if you're developing a product for pet owners, attend pet industry trade shows and conferences. Not only will you get valuable feedback from people who are passionate about your target market, but you'll also make valuable connections with industry professionals. Do not forget to bring plenty of business cards and to be prepared to speak concisely and engagingly about your product. Remember, the goal is not to sell your product, but to start building relationships and generating buzz.

In conclusion, finding people willing to talk to about your product pre-launch can seem like a challenge at first, but it's a challenge that can be overcome with creativity, persistence, and good old fashioned friendliness. If you view everywhere you look as an opportunity, there are countless options to get your product in front of the right people. Just remember to keep things professional, be open to feedback, and don’t be discouraged if not everyone loves your product as much as you do (because that feedback might be the most valuable of all!).

As a final tip, always ask whoever you're talking to who is interested and provides helpful feedback if they know someone else you could talk to. This will help you expand your relevant network and reach even more people who could be valuable connections for your startup. With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to finding the right people to talk to about your product and building a successful startup. So venture forth, be bold, and don't be afraid to think outside the box!
