The Secrets of Social Selling - a guide for everyone week 6 - your URL

The Secrets of Social Selling - a guide for everyone week 6 - your URL

How to change your LinkedIn URL

I think it's worth remembering that lots of the little tings you need to get right on any social network are not in themselves "dealbreakers." This is one of those things. Unlike your profile photo (week 1) or your background image (in a future episode) your URL (short for Uniform Resource Locator - your web address) is not usually something people might even notice.

Nonetheless, making sure you do everything as well as you can is a good starting point for impressing people.

Have you noticed how some people have a really cool URL for their LinkedIn profile www.linkedin.com/in/adamgray and others have something more akin to www.linkedin.com/in/adam-gray-0gtf8t301 well? This is because they have changed it. You should too.

The reason all this matters is that LinkedIn is about the best internet real estate you could possibly have - you have limitless space to write what you want to showcase who you are on an incredibly large and dynamic website, so you want to make sure that you can point people to it as easily and elegantly as possible. You should put links on your company website, on your business cards, on other social networks you should even tell people your address when speaking to them.

The simpler and more catchy this URL is, the better.

So this is how to set your URL:

View your profile (like this). Click the "me" button at the top.

Then click the "view profile button" on the dropdown menu that appears.

Then click "Public Profile & URL" on the right.

When you click the little pencil icon next to this wow...everything looks very different - don't panic because this is "old" gubbins of LinkedIn. You will also notice there are a few switches you can toggle on/off on the right hand side of the page.

So you can spend a few seconds turning all of these on and also setting your profile to "public" so that Google can index it and everyone (whether they are on LinkedIn or not) can see all about you.

Now have a look in the top corner.

Once again, click the pencil icon, and it will expand to a small box to let you change your URL.

Now, I did mine 20 years ago so at that point "adamgray" was available. If I were to do it now I would probably need to choose something more like "theadamgray" or "adamtgray" or "adam-gray" or even "handsomebaldchap." Whatever your name you should be able to find a derivative that you like. Anything is better than what you have by default.

While your here you should also have a quick look at this page because this is what Google sees when it indexes the page. You'll notice it's long and you will see on mine just how many words there are on the page (bear this in mind for future).

This is the footprint we are going to build-out together. Just think of the opportunities created by having a page all about you containing everything that you would want prospective business partners, associates, clients and even employers to know.

Thanks for joining me for another week and see you next time...

Typically Social Sellers have a much greater ability to start conversations with their ideal customers and as a result have a more robust and dependable pipeline and typically close more business than their noon-social counterparts.

There's also a fine line between personalizing and an over-the-top moniker, Adam. You don't want to come on too strong.

Amazes me why so many people don't change their URL, by not changing your URL you look like spammer.

The URL is one of the first things I look at, and I'm embarrassed to admit I make a judgement. The number of digital experts that haven't tidied theirs up amazes me. I'm lucky, as the only Ieuan Compton, I never have the need to go for TheIeuanCompton or TheBaldOldOne 😂 Another good lesson this week Adam. Thank you.
