Security Managers must know that there are moles

Early one morning with coffee and a smoke in hand, I slid the door open to look-out towards the sea. My eyes dropped down onto the garden and the jaw fell open, the eyes widened and shock overcame me when I saw these mounds of dirt dotting the garden. ''There is a mole in my garden''. Thinking on this experience while sitting down to put over an idea in security made me recall the feeling shock and disappointment of people that I thought would never do something - did something!

Not finding the mole:Considering the implications - could the security practitioner or criminologist afford to be unaware of what is truly happening on the ground. This must be the biggest nightmare of any practitioner that could easily experience life impacting or life & death situations.

What is it that, we must consider and comprehend to motivate action with urgency?

The illegal economy of the world is the 'value-size' of organized crime and gang crime. Where there are services and products in the legit world, there are mirrored illegitimate products besides illegitimate services. We are talking into the trillions of dollars! Because of the size and value of the beast- surely, many companies may not know if they are compromised or perhaps their partners or staff are.

It is unfortunate that the finance department of companies consider the security department as an expense and write off a certain percentage each year to cover theft of their products. There could even be larger financial implications related to crime and more so erode the financial base besides the theft of goods because other issues could land up devouring a huge chunk of profits, such as reputation-damage relating to staff involved in terror attacks, cases of sexual abuse, or participating in the trafficking of drugs, weapons, organs, and humans.

When the practitioner cannot read their true situation, the people or person-of-interest involved then they are inviting collateral damage. The problem is that not all practitioners are able to comprehend the true situation, know who or why to investigate further, for various reasons;

This may be hard-hitting for some to read - but - there is a light at the end of the tunnel...

  1. Feeling of inadequacy: There are academics and practitioners that cannot believe how little they know after being in the field for years because they are in a constant state of being amazed at what is being uncovered or discovered.
  2. Acceptance of Responsibility. The mentality towards the job is undermined by society whereas the security manager is undervalued. Security practitioners that know that they are responsible of the lives of others, are in a consistent state of professional development just like a surgeon must because they know their responsibility. They do not care with others think, and dwell more so on contributing towards the lives of others.
  3. Aware of their character traits. They know that when they are bias in any way - be it , xenophobic, religiously bias, intellectually arrogant or have other personal issues and are unable to regulate their thoughts or actions, then they are unable to read the person-of-interest that may connect them to the people that are involved to comprehend the big-picture
  4. Unskilled in skill-craft. They are gullible and do not realize that others can read them better while they are reading others. People do lie, hide or volunteer information for their own agenda. It could be their unconscious desire or conscious agenda. Mastering the skill-craft is daily practice - just like a surgeon peels an apple with a scalpel each morning to keep their fingers nimble.
Like minded practitioners belong to ISIO or Subscribe to HIM to meet together in live virtual 1 hour interactive meeting workshops to discuss issues and suggest tools or methods to acquire the necessary skill-sets to master the skill-craft.
