Seeing the Things Worth Seeing

“If your eyes are opened, you will see the things worth seeing.” – Rumi

As we search for meaning in our lives, we are often deceived as to where to look for it. The next shiny object and the most popular self-help guru often captures our attention, then off we go to follow the path of yet another, all the while leaving us feeling empty.

The news, social media, and advertisements surround us and are all guaranteed to distract us from our lives, as they seek our attention. “Satisfaction guaranteed” is not always what it seems. It can be increasingly difficult to stay in the present moment, where our life is actually occurring, with so much overload of information.

If we really open our eyes and our spirits to the wonders of life around us, we will perceive the world with more clarity, looking through the distractions to what matters. This clearer understanding of life will not direct us toward others for answers. It will inspire us to direct our thoughts inward, where we will discover all of the answers we seek for our life’s challenges.

I lived in Peru in my early twenties, teaching health and hygiene to the Peruvian people in the altiplano region, often visiting small villages in my work. I witnessed abject poverty by the world’s standards, but met some of the most kind, loving, and gracious people I have ever met. While they certainly wanted their children to have more opportunities financially, many remained closely connected with their spiritual self, not distracted by material things to the degree that I certainly was then.

When I visited one home in particular, the mother of the family, served me a hot bowl of rice with a fried egg on top, from their meager food supplies. I knew the meal they had prepared for me would mean less food for their family of six, but as their guest, it was considered an honor being served by them. They shared literally all they had with me. It meant a great deal to them that I accepted this offering of friendship. Out of respect for their generous gift, I ate every bite. Although I felt uncomfortable knowing they would go without to feed me, I knew it was important to receive their generosity.

I felt profoundly humbled being in the company of greatness. Not in a material sense, but in a spiritual sense. They taught me so much in that simple act about presence, living in the now, and giving to others, even when they did not know when their own next meal would come for themselves and their children. That humble act of respect and generosity, has never left me.  The teacher learned vastly more from the student that day (and many others).

Each of us has the power within, to discern what we need to do at any moment, that is not dependent on circumstances, wealth, or social position. Really seeing and taking in what is right in front of you, is often the very best teacher.
