Self-centered leaders or self-aware leaders – With whom do you think you should work?
Self-centered leaders or Self-aware leaders – With whom do you think you should work?
I am sure we all have faced self-centered leaders in our careers or life once. They love themselves. They have poor listening skills. They feel they know everything. They are afraid to accept their mistakes. They are self-admired, completely self-absorbed and they tend to make unilateral decisions without understanding situations. They do not believe in sympathy and they are not at all empathetic. Working with these kinds of leaders needs lots of courage, patience, and tolerance. Most of the energy goes into massaging their egos and pleasing them giving full attention always.
But, I feel being self-centered is normal. It is human nature. No harm in it. But, in this 21st century, more than self-centered leaders, businesses or employees need self-aware leaders. Self-aware leaders are calm, composed, and have much more empathy towards any situation. These types of leaders listen to others, see situations from neutral perspectives, do not make unilateral decisions, and also give respect to others.
Better Decision Making: Self-centred leaders make better decisions, no doubt about that. But, they are not open to feedback or different viewpoints. They force staff/employees to follow his/her path. On the other side, self-aware leaders are going along with the group. They listen and understand different viewpoints to make decisions. They value others and they graciously accept other viewpoints while making decisions.
Empathy: Self-centred leaders do not think about others. They do not care about the workforce or what others think. They only ensure the implementation and execution of their agendas. They feel they are right and they can’t be wrong. They do not respect and trust others. If their agenda is not met, they become agitated. However, self-aware leaders are much more empathetic. They think of others and they trust people who can deliver for them. They need the brains and skills of others who can deliver good results. They also like to empower others instead of overpowering them.
Acceptance: Self-centred leaders blame others when they fail. Or, they do not accept their mistakes. On the other side, self-aware leaders have acceptance power. They accept their mistakes as well. Also, they give credits to others when they face success. They are much more people leader than the self-admired leader.
Both types are right from their perspective. But, in the 21st century what is needed? I think we need more self-aware leaders who are empathetic and people-centric. In these trying times, leaders need to be calm, composed, and open. Self-centered leaders may be successful, but that may not be long lasting. They may see shortfalls soon. On the other hand, self-aware leaders may not see quick wins, but they know that they have bigger things to achieve and they are on track.
Now, you decide with whom do you think you should work. My choice is self-aware. What is yours?

8moSelf-centered leaders undermine the good intentions that individuals naturally bring to their jobs. These practices reduce a direct report's sense of self-accountability. Employees who work for a self-centered and dominating manager will begin to doubt or abandon their belief in their abilities to achieve success.
