A sense of belonging and how an internship at Dell changed my life

I’m a Venezuelan currently living in Panama and with my short but well lived age, everyone at the site calls me "the millennial". I don’t know if it’s because of the way I dress or my ability to google everything in seconds, but whatever the perception, I feel proud to represent my generation.

I came to this country with my head down but full of dreams and my relentless desire to "change the world", I know, it may sound ambitious but I strongly believe that a lot of small people, in small places, doing small things... can definitely make a difference.

So here I was, with many ideas, facing new challenges but lacking a sense of purpose. Until one day, I decided to venture into LinkedIn and after a few (many) attempts I found the internship that changed my life.

Just imagine…at 21 years old, I was starting my first professional experience in one of the best and biggest companies in Central America! I was overwhelmed with excitement and confusion like Emma Watson in The Circle, but with a fearless ambition to take on this new chapter in my life.

I have always felt the need of being part of a tribe, and when you start a new role or even scarier, when you move to a new country, you have this strong need to feel that you belong, and in Panama I found a sense of purpose and belonging by doing these 5 things:

  • I concentrated in things that I had in common with people around me, instead of what sets us apart: For instance, like sharing donuts and fries with my peers on a Monday morning or staying late to help others with their project just for the satisfaction of seeing their success.
  • Join groups and activities: For some, this may take a lot of effort but for me, it comes easy. It’s rewarding to work for a company that allows you to pursue your personal and academic goals by developing different skills through employee resource groups and constant training that are offered.

  • Look for other who share your interests, likes and dislikes: It was this way that I could meet people that can hopefully become lifetime friends and joined groups that allowed me to make the positive change in my community that I wanted to fulfill.
  • Try new things and challenge yourself: To be honest, Dell has stretched me to the maximum and as a result, every day I am more proud of myself for what I have become. Looking back on everything that I was afraid to attempt and that thanks to the support of my amazing team, I was able to achieve.
  • Shine and let others shine: Constant challenges always mean constant rewards, and it's thanks to the encouragement words of my mentors and peers, plus knowing the trust they place in me, what makes me wake up every morning excited for the new day to come. Paying it forward is my motto now and striving to make others feel the same way is my goal.

So, my humble recommendation is that if you are a young millennial looking for a first job opportunity, be persistent and patient until you find an amazing place to fit like I did, and once you do, absorb all of the good things and knowledge you possibly can. And if you are a current employee in Dell or other multinational company, take your time to follow any of these recommendations so you can feel fulfilled and inspired with your daily tasks in a way that will help you feel part of something bigger, let passion be your main drive and ultimately, find your own sense of belonging.
