📊 Algo updates

Google's Helpful Content & Link Spam Updates were finally rolled out

Since idle hands are the devil’s playground, Google decided to sprinkle the end of the year with two additional updates to give SEOs something to do during the holiday break:

  • Helpful Content Update (launched on December 6)
  • Link Spam Update (launched on December 14)

The rollout was expected to be finished within 2 weeks, but according to Google reps, there was a security issue with completing them on the holidays, so they took a pause.

After the pause, the rollout was resumed, and only on January 12th, 2023 it was reported that the process had successfully been completed. Instead of the expected 14 days, it took the updates 38 and 29 days respectively to be fully rolled out.

Well, what do you know—turns out the search colossus can also miss deadlines.

In the meantime, everyone who saw their key website metrics drop can start repairing their online vessels after the storm.

2 new Googlebot IP addresses

Google added one new IP6 and one new IP4 IP address to the list, namely:

  • {"ipv6Prefix": "2001:4860:4801:93::/64"},
  • {"ipv4Prefix": "66.249.74.128/27"}

So, if you get a website visitor with these attributes, know that Googlebot is knocking at your virtual door.

Google to ignore robots.txt files with 4хх status codes

That is to say that even if you have the robots.txt file up on your website, but the server returns a 4xx HTTP status code for it (except 429), Google will ignore every rule in the file.

Although it seems rather obvious, Gary Illyes decided to publish a post on his LinkedIn page to settle the issue once and for all.

Core Web Vitals recommendations for 2023

web.dev wrote a great, in-depth article on improving CWVs that John Mueller reposted, saying:

“Here are Google's top recommendations for Core Web Vitals at the moment, based on these criteria:

 * the largest real-world impact

 * relevant and applicable to most sites

 * realistic for most developers to implement”

The article will be especially useful to everyone who wants to improve these metrics but doesn’t have a clue where to start.

🔍 SERP features

(test) Google Search Perspectives & Opinions

We’ve known about Perspectives for a while now, but Perspectives & Opinions is something totally new.

Barry Schwartz wrote that the former is closer to featured snippets and the latter is similar to product reviews.

Product price ranges and custom CTAs going away

Google has announced that as of February 15, 2023, product price ranges and custom call to actions will no longer be supported.

If by any chance you have products with these features on your Google Business Profile listing, you have almost a month to polish off your GBP.
