Setting Boundaries in the Workplace

On May 17th 2024 at the Kempinski Hotel, warm light bathed a beautifully decorated room, the air buzzing with friendly conversation. Breakfast beckoned with tantalizing aromas, while coloring books - a playful nod to inner child exploration - lay on inviting tables. This wasn't your average business meeting; it was the EQ4Africa conference - mental health edition 2.0, a beacon of hope in a world grappling with the relentless pace of modern life.

The urgency for this event was palpable. Mental health, once relegated to the shadows, has become a pressing concern, especially in the workplace. The pandemic's aftershocks continue to ripple, blurring the lines between work and personal life. Balancing career, family, education, and personal well-being feels like a constant tightrope walk. Burnout is at an all-time high, and the need for solutions has never been greater.

This is where the magic of EQ4Africa unfolded. The diverse group of professionals gathered there shared a common goal: to foster mental well-being at work. It was a space of unity, a collective sigh of relief as we acknowledged the struggles we all face. As I reflect on this day, a profound sense of gratitude washes over me.  Here, amidst the shared wisdom, one concept resonated most deeply: the transformative power of setting boundaries.

Lizz Ntonjira , our captivating keynote speaker, wove a spellbinding narrative that set the stage for this exploration. Through a personal anecdote about her son, she highlighted the societal pressure to avoid being seen as "difficult." Yet, the consequences of not setting boundaries can be detrimental. Lizz referenced the liberating power of saying "no" as championed in the book "The Year of Yes," reminding us of the importance of prioritizing our own needs.

Lizz’s thought-provoking questions struck a chord:

  • Do you feel overwhelmed by others' demands?
  • Are you sacrificing your well-being to please others?
  • Do you keep people at arm's length to protect your peace of mind?

If you answered yes to any of these, it is time to talk about setting professional boundaries.

The truth is, today's work environment is a minefield of blurred lines. Dedication and hard work are crucial for success, but so is maintaining balance. This is where boundaries come in – the invisible walls we build to protect ourselves from overextending.

These boundaries are more than just lines on a map; they are the foundation of our well-being. They help us manage stress, stay focused, and maintain energy levels. By saying "yes” to every request, we risk burnout, a state of chronic stress and fatigue that can cripple our careers and personal lives. Boundaries are a shield, protecting our mental and physical health.

But the benefits extend far beyond self-preservation. Setting boundaries can actually enhance our productivity. Regular breaks and defined work hours might seem counterintuitive, but they allow for focused work, minimizing distractions and enabling us to complete tasks efficiently.

Perhaps the most surprising benefit is the positive impact on work relationships. Effective communication of boundaries fosters mutual respect and understanding among colleagues. It sets a clear standard for how you expect to be treated and how you treat others, leading to a more positive and collaborative environment.

So, how do we embark on this empowering journey of setting boundaries? Here are some practical steps that have helped me:

  1. Self-Awareness is Your EQ Superpower:  Understanding your limits and needs is the cornerstone. Reflect on past experiences that left you feeling overwhelmed and identify the triggers. Knowing yourself sets the stage for setting appropriate boundaries.
  2. Communicate Clearly: Be open and honest with colleagues and supervisors. Use "I" statements, for example, "I need to leave by 6 pm to maintain work-life balance." Clear communication sets expectations and avoids misunderstandings.
  3. Master the Art of "No": It's okay to say no, especially if you are already at capacity.  Politely declining extra tasks shows you value your time and prioritize quality work. Explore "soft nos" by suggesting someone else might be a better fit or offering to take on the task at a later time.
  4. Define Your Work Hours and Take Breaks:  Stick to specific work hours. Breaks aren't luxuries; they improve concentration and reduce stress. Turn off work notifications outside work hours. Let your team know your availability.
  5. Time Management is Key:  Focus on high-priority tasks, delegating or postponing less critical ones. This ensures important tasks get the attention they deserve.

Setting boundaries might evoke guilt especially if you are used to being ‘always on’. But selfcare is not selfish. Approach conversations with empathy and clarity.
