Setting Things Straight for a Fresh Start

Setting Things Straight for a Fresh Start

As we prepare to transition from July into August, a month symbolizing new beginnings as the 8th month of the year, it's a perfect time to reflect on the importance of starting things on the right note. This revelation came to me as I pondered the story of Hezekiah in 2 Chronicles 29:3-11, where he began his reign by reopening the doors of the Temple of the Lord and repairing them.

In the first month of the first year of his reign, Hezekiah opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them. He brought in the priests and Levites, gathered them in the square on the east, and said, “Listen to me, Levites! Consecrate yourselves now and consecrate the temple of the Lord, the God of your ancestors. Remove all defilement from the sanctuary. Our parents were unfaithful; they did evil in the eyes of the Lord our God and forsook him. They turned their faces away from the Lord’s dwelling place and turned their backs on him.”

Hezekiah’s actions teach us several important lessons about setting things straight, which can also apply to our personal and professional lives:

  1. Identify What Needs Repair: Just as Hezekiah recognized the need to repair the doors of the Temple, we must identify areas in both our personal and professional lives that require attention and restoration. It could be relationships, work habits, commitments, or professional goals that have been neglected or damaged.
  2. Remove Defilement: Hezekiah commanded the Levites to remove all defilement from the sanctuary. Similarly, we need to cleanse our personal lives, work environment and mindset from anything that hinders our professional growth. This may involve addressing past mistakes, seeking forgiveness, and letting go of unproductive practices.
  3. Consecrate Yourself: Consecration is about dedicating ourselves wholly to both our personal and professional goals and values. As we step into a new month, let us dedicate our time and efforts to achieving excellence, seeking wisdom and guidance in all that we do.
  4. Restore Focus: Hezekiah restored proper worship in the Temple. We, too, should prioritize our focus, making time for strategic planning, professional development, and meaningful work. Let us ensure that our efforts are sincere and impactful, not just routine.
  5. Lead by Example: Hezekiah led by example, encouraging the priests and Levites to follow his lead. We can inspire our colleagues and teams by our actions, demonstrating the importance of setting things straight and striving for professional excellence.

As we transition into August, let us take a moment to reflect on these principles and apply them to our personal and professional lives. What areas in your personal life and career need realignment? Is it your work-life balance, your relationship with colleagues, or perhaps your commitment to your career goals?

May we all start this new month with a renewed sense of purpose, aligning our personal and professional lives with our goals and values, setting things straight just as Hezekiah did. Let us embrace this new beginning with determination and clarity, knowing that we have the strength and wisdom to achieve our aspirations.
