The Seven Clutter Spots that Will Halt Your Finances, Love, Career, and Health
Some people don’t fully understand what clutter is. They often associate it with the overwhelming messes we see on TV shows about hoarding. Yes, that’s one form of clutter, but clutter comes in many levels. Recognizing these levels can help you improve the quality of your life.
If you’re dealing with hoarding—unable to enter your bedroom or still keeping last week’s plastic cups—please seek professional help. That’s severe clutter. But if you have a few overstuffed closets, a room filled with boxes, or a garage that holds everything you can’t find a place for, you’re dealing with small to medium clutter. This blog will help you on your journey to a clutter-free home.
Why a Clutter-Free Home Matters
Some people wonder how clearing out a closet or medicine cabinet could improve their lives. In Feng Shui, clutter slows progress, drains energy, and can even negatively impact decisions and actions. It does this by affecting the energy of objects, the environment, and the thoughts of anyone who encounters it.
Everything is energy. Every time you glance at that messy closet or kitchen cabinet and think, I need to clean that, it occupies mental space and drains your energy. This detracts from the focus you need to solve problems, create, and even nurture relationships. You can read more about this in my book Women, Rice, and Beans.
If you have health challenges, a clutter-free home is essential. The energy in your space should be light, free, and supportive—and that’s exactly what you’ll get by decluttering.
Feeling skeptical? Try these simple suggestions and see what happens. You have nothing to lose!
1) Bedroom Clutter
The energy of your bedroom is the most important in your life. You spend significant time here, especially while sleeping, when your resistance is low. The energy in your bedroom affects your sleep, career, finances, health, and relationships.
Start by clearing clothes, books, and magazines off the floor. Dust the furniture and change your sheets weekly. Make your bed daily so that when you walk into your room at the end of the day, it feels inviting. Remove the TV and electronics, or at least stop using them 30 minutes before bed. If your bedroom feels dark or you struggle to sleep, check out chapter three of my book Women, Rice, and Beans, where I explain how feng shui can transform the energy of your bedroom and impact your love life, health, finances, and creativity.
2) Kitchen Cabinets
Your kitchen’s energy is directly tied to your finances. If your cabinets are filled with expired food or items you no longer use, it reflects a sense of carelessness in your financial energy. Organize and clean your cabinets often to refresh your energy.
3) Medicine Cabinets and Drawers
This is a space you likely use daily. Don’t hold onto old medications or products you no longer need. Discard them and make space for new energy. Holding onto half-empty products signals you’re holding onto the past. Let them go, and tell the universe you’re ready for fresh beginnings.

4) Bedroom Closet
Open your closet and assess how much room you have for abundance. If your hangers are packed tightly together, it’s not abundance—it’s the opposite. The rule is simple: if you haven’t worn it in a year, donate, sell, or discard it. For every new item you buy, two old ones should go. If you’ve been trying to sell something for over 30 days with no luck, donate it.
5) Garage
Cleaning the garage is like cleaning up your secrets. You have nothing to hide. If you use your garage as the primary entrance to your home, it’s crucial that the space is clear of clutter. It sets the tone for your outer life and the energy you encounter when you come home. Want to release emotional secrets? Start by clearing your garage, and watch how things begin to open and heal.
6) Office Space
Your office reflects your career. A cluttered desk means a cluttered mind. If your desk is broken, repair or replace it with the best one you can afford. Clear the clutter and remove items you don’t regularly use. Some people can’t work unless their desk is clean, while others aren’t bothered by a few piles. Either way, clean up the paper clutter weekly. Don’t forget to declutter your file cabinets and clean out your computer files every six months.
7) Entryway
The energy of your entryway influences key areas of your life. If your front door is on the left, it impacts knowledge and spirituality. If it’s in the middle, it affects your career. If it’s on the right, it influences your ability to receive help. Regardless, a cluttered entryway is bad news. Remove shoes, bags, mail, and anything else that doesn’t belong. You want the energy (chi) to flow freely, not dragging in confusion, heaviness, or negativity.
Try these simple suggestions, and you’ll start feeling lighter, more energized, and aligned with the energy of your home. Let me know if you have any questions.
