Sexism: the beginning of the end?

Sexism: the beginning of the end?

Have we reached the tipping point ?

Tipping Point: “the critical point in a situation, process, or system beyond which a significant and often unstoppable effect or change takes place”. (Merriam Webster dictionary)

So, thanks to the Weinstein scandal, we might well have reached, at last,  the tipping point. This is indeed a historical moment BUT… there is one word in Merriam Webster’s definition that bothers me, the word “often” (“…often unstoppable effect or change…”): this word means that there is a chance that the effect or change be stoppable…and this I do not like at all.

However, rather than not liking the fact that, yes, the whole thing could eventually die down (there are many people in power out there who have too much to lose), let’s instead take it as a constant reminder that we are, each and everyone of us, responsible for keeping up the momentum and making this unstoppable change happen!

What does this entail? And how can it be that we are all responsible – after all, not all women have been graphically abused and not all men are graphic abusers. But the change is not just about graphic abuse and how to eradicate it. Change, true and lasting change, is also - and first - about raising awareness on all aspects of sexism, however mild or benevolent they may seem, since they affirm masculine dominance, pave the way to entitlement, and lead to the unacceptable being accepted

Fighting hostile sexism is tough for sure, but dealing with mild and what may seem benevolent or friendly sexism is just as tough. Even tougher in a way, because it’s effects are so insidious and sneaky that women who dare respond are seen as overreacting or being ridiculous.

So, raising awareness is great, but still not enough: we also need to give practical communication tools on how to respond effectively to all forms of sexism, as well as tips on how to promote equality and respect all around.  This is where the role of organisations is crucial, and the commitment of HR pivotal: NOW is the time to surf on this momentum to reach as many people as possible and inspire them to propagate the good word.

How? Offer conferences and workshops in your organization, make them highly practical and interactive. Make them fun (the subject is serious enough!). Make them inspiring. And if you are not in a position to offer, ask those who are in a position to do so: in either case, don’t let the momentum die down, take part in this historical moment and make the most of it.

And of course, should you or your organisation be looking for someone to deliver such conferences / workshops, I would be delighted to make history with you :).
