In Shadow of John Napier Comes Greatness- 1st prize in Cipher Cracking

Introduction

I am so lucky ... I get to see students graduate every year, and go into jobs, and then get back in contact and say how appreciative they have been of our teaching. I also see PhD students developing into amazing researchers, and move on to produce major impacts with their work. Every day too, I see fantastic and gutsy SMEs, who are taking pushing forward their vision.

At present, every single semester seems to get better, and the opportunities increase by the day. This week, though, has been special, with a 1st prize in the University Cipher Cracking Competition, and it’s our students which are showcased, for both their intellect and their determination. With students so good, it makes my job so easy.

Award winners in Cipher Cracking

In the shadow of the great John Napier and with Alan Turing’s work being showcased, our cipher cracking team won the 2015 University Cipher Challenge, beating off finalists which included Royal Holloway (University of London), Plymouth, Portsmouth, Sunderland, Teesside and Bristol.

Edinburgh Napier University has been a finalist in each year of the competition, and managed to crack more codes this year than any other university, while creating an innovative cipher.

Cipher Cracking Challenge

The competition is open to every university in the UK, and involves university teams creating cipher codes, which the other universities try and crack. The assessment team includes security experts from GCHQ.

So to focus, I gathered together some of the finest students from the School of Computing, and who started to apply all the methods we had just been teaching. It resulted in a number of students directly cracking the ciphers:

Along with other students providing extensive support. The techniques applied used stenography, traditional ciphers, and innovate code hiding.

Showcasing Excellence

The award continues to showcase our drive for excellence in Cyber Security, including being one of the first four universities to have full GCHQ certification for the MSc in Advanced Security and Digital Forensics.

The other finalists where RHUL (Royal Holloway), Teesside, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Bristol and Sunderland. Personally, I am so proud of our amazing students, and that we have some of the best students around, especially as it confirms our leadership for our GCHQ-certified MSc. I have seldom seen such dedication of students, and in them having such fun in working together to solve complex puzzles. If there's one skill which is in high demand in Cyber Security, it is the ability to solve complex problems, and few things are more difficult than cracking the ciphers generated by others.

The team also managed to partially crack most of the other ciphers too. If you are interested … here’s ENU cipher:

Conclusion

I am sure that John would be happy with our work, and that we have showcased that this amazing city can lead ahead of others. It is in Edinburgh that the foundations of the cyber age are being built, and this award confirms that this city (and our students) will play a leading part of the building and protecting of our new virtualised Worlds.

My pride in our environment, our students, and our city, increases by the day, and it is one step forward in really making an impact in a world of new opportunities.

We loved the challenges the other universities gave us, and built up such respect in their skills, and we can't wait for next year.

For our city, I think Mark Zuckerberg says it best with:

To lead the world in this new economy, we need the most talented and hardest-working people

The core work in the team was done by a team made up from France, England, Scotland and Denmark, all working from our base in this beautiful city.

As our crypto work increases by the day, we have fallen in love with the beauty of ciphers and cryptography, and how to continue making an impact, and in defending our title.

Fantastic news and hopefully it inspires others to show what is possible through relentless focus, ingenuity and creativity.
