Now, Let's get started…

How the CIA Shaped the Backbone of Modern Financial Markets

Have you ever wondered who truly owns the stocks and bonds you invest in? The answer might surprise you. According to Chris Martenson, a former scientist and economic researcher, the ownership of most publicly traded securities in the United States is held by a mysterious company called Cede and Co.

The CIA Connection

In the late 1960s, Wall Street was drowning in paperwork due to a surge in trading volumes. To address this crisis, the New York Stock Exchange turned to a former CIA operative named William "Bill" Dener. With his background in covert operations and regime changes in Latin America, Dener was an unlikely choice to revolutionize the stock trading system.

However, Dener's appointment as the chief executive of the newly formed Depository Trust Company (DTC) in 1973 was no coincidence. The DTC was designed to facilitate the electronic transfer of securities, eliminating the need for physical certificates. This centralized system effectively disconnected individual investors from direct ownership of their stocks and bonds.

The Illusion of Ownership

According to Martenson's research, Cede and Co., a subsidiary of the DTC, technically owns most publicly issued stocks in the United States. Investors, therefore, do not hold direct property rights to their holdings but rather have contractual rights that are part of a complex chain involving Cede and Co.

This arrangement raises significant questions about transparency and accountability. Cede and Co. are shrouded in secrecy, with little public information available about its operations, directors, or employees. The company's address, 55 Water Street in New York City, is the same location as the DTC's headquarters.

The Power of Financial Control

Martenson argues that the CIA's involvement in shaping the modern financial system was a strategic move to consolidate power and control over the flow of money. By centralizing security ownership and trading through a complex network of intermediaries, the system became vulnerable to manipulation and potential asset seizures during emergencies.

This revelation challenges the notion of a free-market capitalist society and raises concerns about the true ownership of individual wealth. As Martenson puts it, "The point was how do we begin to collect and cool all of this power so that we can stage basically what turns out to be a silent financial, monetary coup of the United States."
