Shameless Persistence
“Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. Luke 11: 5-8 [Jesus words]
Persistence pays! It's an essential virtue to have in life, believer or non-believer. There are many people who would have accomplished much in their life and career if they only persisted. But many of our lives are characterized by giving up too early [weariness] in the journey. We sometimes lose focus and simply fail to develop consistency in our habits. In fact, when some believers find a barrier in their way, they immediately conclude that 'it is not God's will' for their life. Some barriers are actually meant to form this very virtue. Once we go through, our testimony will show others that the mountain can be moved.
The Bible is full of stories of people who stayed the course in spite of the obstacles; Hannah, Abraham, Esther, Joseph, Jacob, Job, Nehemiah, Jesus, Paul etc. A notable passage is found in Luke 18:1-8 where Jesus told a story to illustrate that we ought to pray and NEVER GIVE UP. This was the parable of 'The Persistent Widow'.
"... And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ For a while he refused, but afterward, he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’ "
How many times have you given up even when you are convinced that the very thing you are pursuing is something you deserve?
Whether it's that job you have dreamt of, a scholarship application you have been rejected from 7 times, a girl you like and is playing hard to get, a skill you are improving on but seems harder than anticipated, or a habit you are looking to break that has beset in your life for years on end, stay in the fight till the final round.
We can all agree that some life occurrences can be very disappointing and unfair. We can do everything right and things still don't work out as we expected. The Bible recognizes this in Proverbs 13:12, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life." Our hearts break and we can easily give up after many tries & endless frustration. You may not get what you want but the promise of persistence holds more reward than giving up.

We can also trivialize this because at times we don't understand why God would make us wait and keep us in continual prayer for a matter. Some would dare ask, if God is powerful, why doesn't He come to my rescue? Didn't he say, 'Ask and it will be given'? Does He enjoy watching us suffer? Certainly not! Apostle John William Kimani from Kenya shares in a sermon 3 things that can be drawn from our persistent prayer seasons;
Therefore friends, stay the course and fight the good fight. Following the parable of the widow, Jesus asserts that; "And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?"
Galatians 6:9 is my encouragement to you today; Let us not become weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
As for me [just like David], "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." Ps 27:13-14
