Shaping Tomorrow’s Energy: Highlights from UNECE's Leadership at the World Energy Congress

At this week's World Energy Congress in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, UNECE Sustainable Energy Sustainable Energy Team contributed with energy leadership voices to several timely discussions on building resilient and carbon-neutral energy systems:

1. No transmission, no transition - it is a must to improve electricity system resilience as an enabler of the energy system transformation it is a must to improve electricity system resilience as an enabler of the energy system transformation. Attainment of the Agenda 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050, requires fundamental changes in how different sectors of the economy are structured and powered. @UNECE and its partners @PRI, @EDF, @WNA and @IAEA are launching a joint initiative on building low-carbon resilient electricity systems. Join the dialogue and stay tuned!

2. Atoms for climate -  nuclear power is an important source of low-carbon technology and heat. @UNECE and @IAEA discussed the role of nuclear power in the clean energy transition and disseminated the findings from the UNECE Carbon Neutrality Toolkit. Join us in amplifying the impact of this significant work!

3. Overcome hurdles to H2 growth with @UNFC - establish an internationally agreed-upon classification system that is clear, scientifically rigorous and east to implement. Depart from the rainbow colour coding and agree to use the life-cycle carbon emissions intensity of H2 production. UNECE Task Force on Hydrogen is looking into this matter and applying @UNFC for H2 projects --> Towards a Hydrogen Economy in the UNECE Region. Join the community if you want to make a change.

4. Explore new models of stretch collaboration - in the face of geopolitical crises, fostering inclusive collaboration for the energy transition is essential. It is necessary to unite diverse stakeholders to harness shared knowledge and drive innovative solutions for resilient and carbon-neutral energy systems. #UNECE and #WEC are joining forces to explore how the World Energy Scenarios - inclusive and strategic framework - can enable big-picture thinking and decision-making on a national level under deep uncertainty. We will be zooming on the Republic of Moldova - stay tuned!

5. Redesigning Energy for People and Planet - to ensure that the shift to sustainable energy systems is fair and inclusive for all. It is necessary to address the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of energy transition, aiming to minimize negative impacts on vulnerable communities and promote equitable access to clean energy solutions. #UNECE for Europe will continue collaborating with #Kazenergy in accelerating the just energy transition in Kazakhstan. We will also continue promoting the concept on just energy transition across the Western Balkans region. After a successful just transition assessment in Albania, we will be sharing the best practices in Kosovo.
