Shattering the Glass Ceiling: 10 Power Moves for Women Rising to the Top 🔝 #IWD 2024 edition
I spoke about this yesterday at TEMCA's IWD 2024 Conference Day 1.
This picture above gives us a peek into the workplace through the lens of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), highlighting how gender plays a role in the upper echelons of the business world. It reveals that out of all the folks holding down senior management spots, 37.1% are women and 62.9% are men. Clearly, there's a gap here, showing us that men tend to occupy more of these top-tier roles than women do.
Tackling this imbalance isn't just a nice thought—it's necessary, and there are several paths we could take to make headway:
Re-Kicking Off Diversity and Inclusion Efforts: Companies could roll out programs that are all about boosting women's presence in leadership. This could mean mentoring, specialized training, and career growth opportunities tailored for women. I say re-kicking because the news outlets and online information are pointing to the fact that organizations are taking out DEI projects, literally going back to the status quo before the George Floyd situation.
Rethinking How We Hire and Promote: It's time to take a hard look at the existing processes for hiring and promotions to root out any bias that might be holding women back from climbing the ladder to senior roles.
Setting Concrete Goals: Some companies are getting proactive, setting specific markers or even quotas for women in leadership, aiming to hit these targets within a set period.
Fostering a Supportive Workplace: Policies that allow for a better balance between work and life—think flexible schedules, the option to work from home, and generous parental leave—can help everyone, including women, manage both career and personal life better.
Changing the Culture: We need a workplace culture that celebrates different leadership styles and truly values the contributions of women at the top. This can shift perceptions and cut down on bias that's often not even recognized.
Keeping Tabs on Progress: By being open about where they stand on gender representation in leadership and regularly sharing updates, companies can keep themselves accountable and track how well they're doing in bridging the gap.
The roots of this disparity run deep, tangled up in societal norms and biases that sketch out traditional roles based on gender, creating hurdles for women aiming for the top. From the "pipeline problem," where there simply aren't enough women in line for these roles, to the juggling act of managing career and family demands, to the scarcity of female role models in leadership—these are complex challenges that need nuanced solutions.
Addressing these concerns takes more than just policy changes; it requires a shift in mindset at both the organizational and societal levels to ensure everyone has a fair shot at leadership roles, regardless of gender.
I'm all about Solutions!!!!!!
