Women & Salary Negotiation 🤝 A Recruiters Experience

The gender pay gap is alive and kicking in Australia. While progress is happening, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency reports women still earn just 78 cents for every dollar men make. That's a staggering $26,393 difference annually!

The Negotiation Gap: Why Women Hold Back

Coming from both agency and in-house recruitment, I've noticed a stark contrast in salary negotiations. Women rarely push back on initial offers (I can probably count the number of times on TWO HANDS!), while men do it like it's second nature.

Here's the shocker:

  • Women face labels like "pushy" or "greedy" for negotiating, while men are seen as assertive.
  • This double standard discourages women, perpetuating the cycle of underpayment.

✨Some of the responses I’ve received over the years (genuinely....)✨

Why do Women get such visceral response to asking for more money and Men don't?

  • Gender Bias: Stereotypes paint women as less competent negotiators, leading to self-doubt.
  • Fear of Backlash: The risk of being perceived negatively holds women back time and time again.
  • Limited Information: Women often lack salary data, making it harder to gauge fair compensation.
  • Lack of confidence: Women consistently undervalue their own ability and value. A Harvard Gazette study found women consistently rate their performance lower than men, despite equal scores. Men averaged a 61 out of 100, while women averaged 46. Even when job offers and pay were tied to self-evaluation, women still self-promoted less.
  • Does low representation in tech make women question their place in these fields before even asking for fair pay? 💁

✨Breaking the Cycle ✨

We need a multi-pronged approach:

  • Shatter Stereotypes: Dismantle the myths around women and negotiation.
  • Empower Women: Equip women with salary data and negotiation skills.
  • Culture Shift: Foster workplaces where fair pay is the norm, not a privilege.
  • ASK!!!! Don't be afraid to ask the question! You won't get the raise if you don't ask the question. Men do it all the time - so why shouldn't we?
