Winter Can Be Brutal on Your Mind and Body
It's been chilly here in the Atlanta metro area, hovering around the 30s or 40s for an unusually long stretch. Because our weather here often mimics that of a place like Hawaii or the Mediterranean, we are spoiled and usually prefer to stay inside the minute the air turns even slightly cold.
But I remember a co-worker who would get very quiet, somewhat melancholy, and listless when we went through periods of cloudiness and rain during our colder winter months. She would mention how things seemed so dark and depressing in the winter but brightened up in the spring. I didn't give it much thought because I figured she was talking about how pretty it looked when spring finally arrived, and the sun emerged for hours each day with a bright blue sky as a backdrop.
Later, I realized my co-worker probably had SAD, or seasonal affective disorder. But I’m not a doctor, so I just asked her if she had ever thought about whether she was affected by it.
What Exactly Is SAD?
As it turned out, the doctor had given her that diagnosis, although it was considered mild in her case. The NIMH (National Institutes of Mental Health) classifies seasonal affective disorder as a depressive disorder ranging from mild to severe. There are two patterns of this condition: winter, which I’m discussing first, and summer, which has different symptoms and treatment protocols.
Equipment Can Help
To combat the psychological effects of winter’s shorter daylight hours, some people use 1000-lux light therapy boxes (that filter out UV light for safety, of course) to help them endure the season.
A lux is a unit of illumination that calculates to one lumen per square meter. Here’s an interesting side note: The Department of Energy recommends buying ordinary light bulbs in terms of lumens rather than watts. Watts indicate the energy you consume, but lumens indicate the bulb’s light intensity.
I’ll give you an example so you can make a comparison. You can replace a 40-watt bulb with an energy-saving bulb that gives you 450 lumens.

But if you have a mild case and obtain your doctor’s permission, you can take other simple self-care steps that make a difference.
Help Yourself to Some Recreation
The NIMH provides a short list of remedies, including finding activities that keep you busy. I thought about a few myself. For instance, you can indulge in the following:
Consider watching lighter movie fare to keep your spirits elevated. But remember that it’s easy to fall back into sedentary laziness, so afterward, wrap up warmly and go for an energizing walk.
You can also participate in indoor workouts (on a stationary bike, for instance) or meditation sessions. But always consult a professional if your SAD affects your ability to conduct daily activities. Depression or suicidal thoughts are serious matters requiring treatment. And don’t forget the emergency number to use when experiencing a crisis: 988.
Troubled Sleep Occurs During Brighter Months, Too
Yes, it's true. Some people experience health problems because they have trouble sleeping in the springtime. Why? Scientists believe this results from too much light interfering with the release of melatonin, the sleep hormone.

Your Location Is a Factor
The environment can exert an influence. Consider those who live in the Land of the Midnight Sun. I always thought the title referred to Fairbanks, Alaska, where they enjoy at least a muted version of the sun for 70 straight days from late April through the latter part of July.
But my research revealed that the official Land of the Midnight Sun is the country of Norway, where a city like Tromso hosts this phenomenon from late May to July.
That's far from the urban areas in the northern part of the US, where many people get plenty of snow, rain, or simply cloudier weather and dark, cold nights from November through February or early March. The midnight sun is nonexistent.
Summary
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that ranges from mild to severe and is characterized by symptoms such as excessive yet ineffective sleep, overeating, reduced energy levels, and difficulty performing daily activities.
Doctors typically treat SAD with light therapy, psychotherapy, medications, and vitamin D. They may also recommend fun self-care activities like giving yourself a facial or nail grooming session, learning a new language for your next travel adventure, or playing music.
Other remedies include outdoor exercise such as walking while wrapped up warmly, working out indoors, and meditating. But if symptoms persist or increase in severity, forget the shyness or the shame. Consult a professional.
