Shirley Chisholm's Handshake: Grasping the Wisdom of Leadership

In the grand tapestry of life, some moments stand as monuments to our growth, aspirations, and encounters with greatness. For me, one such moment materialized in the humble guise of a handshake – a meeting with someone I had admired all my life. As our eyes met and hands clasped, a profound connection sparked, and in that instant, I found myself enveloped in a cocoon of wisdom and kindness.

In leadership, we often extol the virtues of those who occupy the limelight, whose names are etched in history books, and whose achievements adorn the annals of success. Yet, amidst this spotlight, we sometimes overlook the silent architects of change – the unsung heroes who leave an indelible mark on our lives through their resilience and unwavering determination.

This encounter, etched vividly in the corridors of my memory, served as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of leadership – not just the kind that commands attention but the quieter, more profound leadership that emanates from the depths of the human spirit.

I was a junior in college when the stars aligned. I found myself standing face to face with her – Mrs. Chisholm, if you were raised right - a beacon of strength, a soror of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., and a custodian of wisdom—at that moment, time seemed to stand still as we exchanged greetings, our words woven with mutual respect and admiration.

As we conversed, she imparted a nugget of wisdom that resonated deep within my being: "Your gift will make room for you." In those simple yet profound words lay the essence of authentic leadership – the belief in one's abilities, the courage to pursue one's passions, and the understanding that greatness lies not in the grandeur of our achievements but in the authenticity of our purpose.

I reflected on those words long after our encounter had ended, and they became my guiding light to anchor me in moments of doubt and uncertainty. It reminded me that each of us possesses a unique gift, a spark of brilliance waiting to illuminate the world. And it is only when we embrace this gift wholeheartedly, nurturing it with dedication and perseverance, that we indeed find our place in the world.

In the following years, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, fueled by the belief that my gift – to deliver the unvarnished truth, one leader at a time – would make room for me. I faced challenges, obstacles, frustration, and self-doubt, but I held fast to her words, drawing strength from their timeless wisdom.

Today, as I look back on that fateful meeting, I realize it was more than just a chance encounter – it was a turning point, a catalyst for change. It inspired me to embrace my true potential and step into the leadership arena with confidence and conviction, knowing that my gift, however small or insignificant it may seem, can shape destinies and touch lives.

So, I offer my deepest gratitude to the woman whose words ignited a flame within me and whose kindness and wisdom continue to guide my path.

As I hang this moment on my "Achievement" wall, its significance transcends mere memory – it is a testament to the transformative power of leadership, the enduring legacy of kindness, and the profound impact of words spoken in kindness. If this picture could talk, it would tell a story of resilience, courage, and the unwavering belief that our gifts, no matter how humble, can change the world.

I will always remember...
