Should Mother's Day really be about my husband?

Should Mother's Day really be about my husband?

If the mothers day brochures were a reflection of our lives, today my children should be thanking me for doing the cooking, the washing and keeping the house tidy.

Now, we all know marketing is marketing, but here's the thing… in my house, I would do less than 10% of the cooking, washing and cleaning. To be really honest, I hate cooking with a passion, struggle to even keep track of the washing and probably make the house messier every time I walk in it.

So what do you do when all the paraphernalia around Mother's Day refers to everything that you don't do? When you're reminded how deep gender stereotypes run and just how far we've got to go?

You make up your own meaning.

You celebrate what it is that makes your mum unique and different, regardless of her nurturing capabilities.

We're a somewhat unconventional family - I run my own business more than full-time and have a stay-at-home-husband - so rare that I sometimes call us rainbow unicorns.

In my house today we've celebrated the fact that mummy is a bank (it was literally in my mother's day card!), that she is courageous and backs herself to succeed no matter what. I'm meant to bring home the bacon, to strive to make an impact and see just how far I can push this brain of mine. And it's just a bonus for my girly girl that there's mention of unicorns and her mother in the same sentence.

And come Father's Day in September, we'll be celebrating how lucky we are to have such an amazing dad in our lives, who cooks, cleans and takes care of us.

To all the amazing mums out there, I hope you've had a guilt-free day surrounded by those who love you. May you live life on your terms and raise happy, healthy humans.
