Should we eagerly embrace all the new management trends?
Q. Our teams benchmark our performance with our competitors and the leaders in our business and try to put in place the best practices in our industry, but our teams still struggle and our profit margins suffer. What should we do?
A. Many organizations chase management fads. It's the way they operate; in some cases, it's the way they've operated for decades. As they've grown, they've embraced each new fad as it came along, adding in business methods or protocols because other companies had adopted them. It's like they're playing "Pokémon Go;" they've got to catch 'em all!
Some of the common and popular management fads include performance appraisals; performance management systems; incentives, quotas, bonuses and arbitrary numerical goals; and internal competition. Although widespread, these practices are barriers to healthy, collaborative and productive workplaces.
Unfortunately, many organizations have adopted these fads without ever questioning whether these policies, methods and systems are beneficial at all, much less right for them. In fact, this may be the first time you've considered that these are bad practices.
But don't despair. You now know.
Take a look at the fads your organization has embraced. Evaluate why and how they've hindered its productivity, efficiency, workplace morale and customer satisfaction. You have a huge opportunity to discuss these policies and practices and develop new protocols that reflect your own values and promote both a great work environment and terrific customer experiences.
By getting rid of harmful practices, you can generate 50% to 80% less waste and boost your revenue by two to 10 times. If you want to understand how, let me know.
