I’ve had a recent spike in requests for job search coaching from people looking to get ready to make a change in 2025, very normal for people to start having these thoughts as we wind down the year.

New Years resolutions start being made and some people would change jobs now but this is Australia, the business world has been in “let’s deal with that next year” for over a month now.

But for some of you thinking about changing jobs next year, you shouldn’t and there’s a common reason that I’ve seen people change jobs and then regret it.

Boredom.

You like your boss, you like your colleagues and your job is ok but you’re just a bit bored of the day to day. Some might say you should leave and seek a new challenge, which is sometimes right but have you thought about what you risk losing when you make that change?

Would you rather be in a more challenging role but with a boss you don’t like? Or start a new challenge but don’t click with your colleagues as much as you do now?

But maybe more importantly, have you tried to find a new challenge at your current company?

Having a conversation with your boss about wanting to take on new responsibilities, let them know you’re starting to feel like you’re coasting and don’t want that. If you like your boss already, they are likely to respond well to this request.

If they don’t, you may have just found the justification that it is time to move on.

I don’t want to be a Donny Downer and suggest you will regret changing jobs and that the next place might be better if every category, it’s more understanding the risks and appreciating what you have, if you’re not unhappy but just a little bored.

 

Statistically, most industries will see a slow down in hiring around Christmas most years. I’ve had a few people say things like “no one is hiring in December so there is no point looking” which isn’t entirely true.

Less jobs are advertised. Less hires are made. But it doesn’t mean no one is hired.

So if you are looking, don’t stop looking just because of the time of the year as you never know when the perfect role will open up for you.

In Australia, the traditional marker for when things will pick up is after Australia Day. This is often due to a few things like Senior people having holidays with the family, calendar year budgets being set through January etc.

With the slower job markets we’ve had the past few years, it’s impossible to know if this timeline will continue but also remember that while the news reports on total unemployment figures, each industry and job type is it’s own market.

There might be a 20% increase in retail jobs, which doesn’t really help if you’re a Data Scientist.

So even if people yell you the job market is slow or booming or whatever, remember that they could be talking about a totally different market to the one you’re in.

Hey Mitch King I am a chronic sufferer of job boredom such that typical corporate roles no longer felt challenging after 6-12mths. Hence why I prefer the variety of consulting now 🤷♂️ so can relate.
