Showtime!
Dear friends, partners, and sponsors...
It's showtime for the United World Challenge!
This may be the last time you hear from me directly for a few months, so first of all, let me thank you one last time. I wouldn't be here without your support. I'm so grateful.
I'm aiming to launch tomorrow, weather permitting. As you may have seen from recent United World Challenge social media posts, I'm in Monterey. Weather in the Bay Area has been terrible for rowing and not possible to safely launch for foreseeable future. But there's a window opening here tomorrow, and I've put all my efforts into making rowing out of Monterrey tomorrow night. Stay tuned.
While I'm at sea, please use the information below to help maximize the story of the United World Challenge. Together, we'll grow the campaign, inspire people around the world, and help your brand and causes too.
THANK YOU for your support. I'll be thinking of you out there...
Love,
tez
Embed the Story Map
- This map will show the photos and videos of the journey, placed as "milestones" on the route I travel. The map auto-updates with the latest content that my media team, led by Jerry Johnston.

Amplify our plastic efforts, Ocean Classroom Campaign, and scholarship fund!
- New plastic partnership - Each day during the row, I'll take microplastic samples to be analyzed by Scripps PhD Dimitri Deheyn. The data I collect will be a first-ever sample of airborne microplastics in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which we think may become airborne through sea spray. Here's an example of Dimitri's work. Stay tuned for a United World Challenge podcast episode featuring Dimitri while I'm at sea.
- Ocean Classrooms: Look out for special entries in the Story Map with marine science and coding curricula. These ~5 open source lesson plans will be built by Challenge Chief Science Officer Jess Garwood, PhD, and will be available to any student and teacher worldwide. Share the Story Map and lessons with students/teachers in your community!
- Support the cause with your own Ocean Bottle: Our crowdfund is complete (success!) and the next target is in our sites: raising $75,000 for scholarships to send students of color from the USA to attend UWC-USA. To support this mission, our partners at Ocean Bottle are setting up a custom page to sell United World Challenge Ocean Bottles, with 50% proceeds supporting our scholarship fund. And, as with any Ocean Bottle, sales from each bottle fund the collection of 1,000 ocean-bound plastic containers. This is win-win. Share widely and let's raise $ for education and solving plastic waste!
