Shut Up and Network
If you’re looking for a new job there is no tool more powerful when it comes to landing one than networking.
It doesn’t come easily to everyone.
Yet the ugly truth is that without this particular skill, you’re relying on a job application. And that's one basket you definitely don't want to put all your eggs in.
You can invest time, energy AND money into ensuring your CV is ‘perfect’ for the job(s) you apply to but there are no guarantees that a hiring manager or recruiter will ever see it. Once you click send you cease having control and that sense of helplessness is what tends to send people into a spiral of despair. Sounds like I’m exaggerating? Scroll down your LinkedIn newsfeed for 30 seconds and tell me that people aren’t desperate.
“But I’m posting on LinkedIn everyday, John. Surely that’s networking?”
To a degree, yes. Ask yourself though, do the posts you’re putting out there get anything more than ‘likes’ and the odd comment from the same group of people? Are they converting into tangible opportunities? What is positive sentiment actually worth? It might make you feel good, but it’s not paying the bills.
Networking requires you to be proactive. To put on your business development hat. To advocate for yourself. To believe that a conversation really can lead to a new opportunity. It's not always easy, but it pays off.
According to a Forbes article (link below) it’s estimated that 70-80% of vacancies are filled without the job ever being advertised. You’re not going to find those roles by hiding behind a CV.
So, where to start?
“Is there anyone else you could introduce me to that might be able to help?"
(And always offer to do the same.)
Its tough out there. But there’s a hidden job market full of opportunity if you’re willing to take the leap.
Now go iron some clothes and put your nice shoes on. I'll see you out there 😁
The End.

1moThis is so true John Hawker ; I first heard about the hidden job market yrs ago when I was redundant. It was part of an employment skills programme I had to do. Now, when I help people navigate career transition I also recommend 2 books by Steve Dalton - The 2 Job Search’ where he breaks down how to get conversations and tap into the hidden job market ( takes all the guesswork out) and ‘The Job Closer’ which gives you frameworks to nail interviews, CV’s and negotiation I’ve seen this approach work well with my clients, even had roles created for them!
