SILVER SCREEN POLITICS OF TAMIL NADU
Dr. Bhawaan Tatavarthy and Pandit Sastry R Lanka
In Ancient days, Tamil Nadu was ruled by three dynasties, Cholas in the east, Pandyas in the central area and Cheras in the west.
In 1858 the British Crown assumed direct rule in India.
Congress formed the first ministry in the Madras Presidency. C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) was the first Chief Minister. Madras Presidency was eventually reconstituted as Madras State.
The Madras state was named Tamil Nadu (the land of the Tamils) in 1968.
Tamil Nadu, located in south India, is bounded on the north by Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, on the south by the Indian Ocean, on the east by the Bay of Bengal, and by Kerala on the west.
The state of Tamil Nadu, in southeastern India is divided into 30 districts
Indian National Congress dominated the political scene in the initial years post independence with leaders like C. Rajagopalachari and K. Kamaraj. The political influence shifted from national politics towards regional politics with rise of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the late 1960s.
Justice party was founded by Justice. E.V. Ramasami, popularly known as "Periyar", renamed the party Dravidar Kazhagam in 1944. However, due to the differences between its two leaders Periyar and C.N. Annadurai, the party was split. Annadurai left the party to form the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The DMK decided to enter into politics in 1956.
The DMK routed the Indian National Congress party in the 1967 elections and took control of the state government, ending Congress's stronghold in Tamil Nadu. C.N. Annadurai became the DMK's first Chief Minister, and Muthuvel Karunanidhi took over as Chief Minister and party leader after Annadurai's death in 1969.Karunanidhi's leadership was soon challenged by M.G. Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR. In 1972, he split from DMK and formed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). He was the Chief Minister of the state from 1977 until his death in 1987.
After the death of MGR, the party split again into two factions, one led by Janaki Ramachandran, wife of MGR, and the other led by J. Jayalalithaa. After the defeat of AIADMK in 1989 assembly polls, both factions were merged and Jayalalithaa took control of the party. She was elected as the General Secretary of the unified AIADMK.
The AIADMK allied with the Congress and swept to power in the assembly elections of 1991 under the leadership of Jayalalitha who became the second female chief minister and the 10th chief minister of the state. The ensuing government, including Jayalalithaa, was accused of large-scale corruption, but Jayalalithaa managed to hold on to power for a full term of five years. In the 1996 assembly election, AIADMK continued its alliance with the Congress but suffered a massive rout, winning only four out of the 234 assembly seats, with even Jayalalithaa losing from Bargur. The AIADMK formed an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Vaiko's Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), another breakaway faction of the DMK, during the parliamentary elections in 1998. AIADMK shared power with the BJP in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee headed government between 1998 and 1999, but withdrew support a year later, leading to the fall of the BJP government at the centre. Following this, the AIADMK once again aligned with the Congress.
In the 2001 assembly election, the AIADMK-led alliance, regained power, winning 197 seats, with AIADMK winning 132 of them. Due to the proceedings in a disproportionate assets case which occurred in her previous tenure, she was prevented from holding office. Panneerselvam, a close confidant of Jayalalithaa, was appointed as the Chief Minister on 21 September 2001. Once the Supreme Court overturned Jayalalithaa's conviction and sentence in the case, O.Panneerselvam resigned on March 2002, and Jayalalithaa was sworn in again as Chief Minister.
Later, in the 2006 assembly election, the AIADMK was pushed out of power by the DMK-led alliance.
In the 2011 assembly election, due to corruption and allegations of nepotism against DMK Government, the party, in alliance with parties like the left and actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), swept the polls, winning 202 seats, with the AIADMK alone winning 150. Jayalalithaa was sworn in as Chief Minister for the third time.
In the year 2016, AIADMK won the elections and Jayalalithaa became CM again. After Jayalalithaa's death in December 2016, Jayalalitha's long-time friend Sasikala Natarajan was elected as the General Secretary of the party.
O. Panneerselvam resigned his acting Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu post on 5 February 2017, and the council of TN Ministers signed for Sasikala to be the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 7 February 2017. Several organizations and people of Tamil Nadu opposed her, due to the criminal background case.
The Supreme Court of India announced that the verdict on Sasikala's case would be expected in a week.
On7 February 2017 Tamil Nadu CM, Panneerselvam said he will change his decision if people wants him as CM of Tamil Nadu than he will return again as CM of Tamil Nadu, he also said that Sasikala and her family compelled him to resign his post.
It is not out of place to mention that
1, V.Krishnaveni Sasikala (born 1957), also known as Sasikala Natarajan, is the acting general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). She was a close aide of Jayalalithaa, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, who headed AIADMK from 1989 until her death in 2016. Earlier she was arrested along with Jayalalithaa on 7 December 1996 and was remanded to judicial custody for 30 days. During Jaya's three tenures as Chief Minister, Sasikala was alleged to have laundered huge amounts of wealth amassed by Jayalalitha. On 14 February 2017; a 2-bench Supreme Court jury pronounced her guilty and ordered her immediate arrest in a disproportionate assets case, effectively ending her Chief Ministerial ambitions. It is not out of place to mention that Jayalalithaa expelled Sasikala Natarajan on i9th December 2011and on 3 March 2012 and Sasikala was reinstated as a party member after issuing a written apology. After Jayalalithaa's death in December 2016, the AIADMK general council unanimously appointed Sasikala as the party's general secretary. On, 14 February 2017, the Supreme Court of India held VK Sasikala guilty of laundering illicit wealth worth over 60 crores in the 1990s in a criminal conspiracy with Jayalalithaa and convicted her for a 4 year jail term.
2. Panneerselvam (born 14 January 1951) is served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, holding the office from December 6, 2016 till February 16, 2017 when V. K. Sasikala loyalist, Edappadi K. Palanisamy was appointed as the Chief Minister by Tamil Nadu Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao. He has previously served in the same capacity in 2001-02 and 2014-15. He was a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and was a staunch loyalist of its leader Jayalalithaa. His first two terms as chief minister came to be when he replaced J. Jayalalithaa in the role, after she was forced to resign by the courts. His third term began following Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's death.
3. Palaniswami (born 2 March 1954) is an Indian politician who is the 13th and current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, having assumed the office on 16 February, 2017. He is a senior leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). A kidnapping case has been filed by Koovathur police against him under IPC section 365 for allegedly involved in kidnapping Tamilnadu MLA'S.Edappadi Palaniswami took charge as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, ending the 10-day long bitter feud between AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala and O.Panneerselvam.
On l9 December 2017, he, however, won the vote of confidence, under a high drama witnessed by one and all.
Now, the people should wait and see the reactions of His Highness, the Governor of Tamilnadu.
DMK leadership on the other hand planning to move no confidence motion and also expecting by elections and preparing to encash the situation in their favour. The helpless exCM Panneerselvam is planning to visit all the 30 districts of Tamilnadu to seek support for his new party. At the same time he would like to project Deepa, a close relative of Jayalalithaa.
Whether the elected CMPalaniswamy with the blessings of Chinnaamma (Sasikala) who could muster the support of MLAs in the Assembly could able to gain the support of the people who elected them? Orfcourse, the people are not in favour of by elections now.
The four Chief Ministers Annadurai, Karunanidhi, MGR and Jayalalithaa are having cine links and mass following too. MGR, a Malayalee Nair could able to rule Tamilnadu being a matinee Idol because he is good to the poor and won the hearts of mass. Both Annadurai and MGR are selfless leaders unlike Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa who are corrupt. Karunanidhi having nepotism failed to deliver the goods whereas Jayalalithaa though corrupt could win the hearts of people of Tamilnadu enlarge. Unfortunately the people of Tamilnadu have no other choice except to choose among the DMK and AIADMK. Let us hope a better alternative in the near future.
The culprit should be punished. Though the lower courts punishing the culprits, most of them are escaping at High Court level, but how? This is a million dollar question indeed. Fortunately, Supreme Court confirming the verdict of the lower courts, after so many years. People at large wish that Government of India has to seriously view this matter.
Now, the better alternative is a selfless leader having popularity vote. Unless there is a mass following like MGR and Jalyalalithaa, the voters may not choose their leader, in the present circumstances. A right person has to take a right decision in this regard so as to enable to come out of the crisis soon.
In fact, people of Tamilnadu insist a detailed investigation about the death of “AMMAA”, their beloved leader. However, Jayalalithaa was lucky to die, to live in the hearts of people of Tamilnadu.
Our Astro Research in this regard indicates that
AIADMK may face a problematic condition before June 19th since Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are not much favourable. It may be possible to find out a suitable leader to join the party at last minute and increase popularity being a popular cine personality.
DMK on the other hand may have more involvement and attain favorable results slowly as Jupiter and Saturn are favorable.
There is every possibility of starting a new Political party shortly. It is not wise to predict its situations unless it is formed.
