Simplicity Speaks Louder: The Power of Sunnah in Modern Times!

Dr. Arif ur Zaman, a highly regarded mathematician and current Dean at LUMS, embodies simplicity and devotion to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Known for his modest lifestyle, he often cycles between departments on campus and personally calls the Azan (call to prayer) for the institute’s mosque.

Recently, during the visit of an American delegation to LUMS, Dr. Arif, as Dean, oversaw the arrangements. He prepared two halls for the event: one with tables and chairs for the guests and another with a traditional floor seating arrangement for himself. While the delegation initially headed toward the formal dining tables, their leader noticed Dr. Arif sitting on the floor. Curious, he approached him to ask why he preferred such seating. Dr. Arif explained that sitting on the ground is a Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) and highlighted its benefits.

Moved by his words, the delegation joined him on the floor, eventually expressing how comforting and serene they found the experience.

This story beautifully illustrates how adherence to the Sunnah, coupled with humility, can inspire respect and admiration in others. It also reminds us of the importance of holding steadfastly to our values, as seen in the story of a companion of the Prophet (PBUH) who picked up a fallen morsel of food in a royal court, undeterred by societal norms, declaring, “Why should I leave the Sunnah of my Prophet for these foolish people?”

Thought-Provoking Reflections:

  1. The Universality of Sunnah: How can something as simple as sitting on the floor to eat create a profound connection with others? This story highlights that the values of humility and simplicity transcend cultural and religious boundaries, resonating deeply with all of humanity.
  2. Courage in Conviction: Are we willing to uphold our principles even when societal norms challenge us? The steadfastness of Dr. Arif and the companion of the Prophet (PBUH) inspire us to prioritize integrity over conformity.
  3. Influence Through Action: Leadership isn't just about status or authority—it's about living by example. Dr. Arif’s adherence to the Sunnah turned a formal delegation into a moment of shared humanity and respect.
  4. Small Acts, Big Impact: Often, it’s the seemingly small acts, like following a Sunnah or picking up a morsel of food, that leave the most lasting impressions. What are the "small acts" we can do today to inspire respect and understanding in those around us?

This story beautifully intertwines faith, leadership, and human connection, reminding us that living authentically in alignment with our values can be a powerful force for positive change.
