Empowering Entrepreneurs in Cambodia: Lessons from My Recent Trip

In September, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Cambodia as part of the U.S. Speakers Program. Over the course of a week, I trained 400 entrepreneurs in Cambodia’s two largest cities, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. This experience was not only enriching for the participants but also for me, as it deepened my understanding of the power of cross-cultural exchange, and the importance of localizing content to connect with diverse audiences.

The entrepreneurs I trained came from various industries, including hospitality, retail, and agriculture, all eager to apply new strategies to scale their ventures. The sessions covered everything from digital marketing, social selling and 12 Ps of running a successful business.

Working with translators was a key part of the experience. While English was widely understood, many of my presentations were delivering information in Khmer—the local language. One of the most memorable parts of the trip was learning from the participants themselves I traveled to a local village to learn to prepare traditional Khmer dishes from a local chef who was one of my students. Cambodia has a rich culture and history. In addition to teaching, I traveled to Angkor Wat, the largest Hindu Temple in the world, saw the temple used in the movie Tomb Raider, and was able to learn about history of The Khmer Rouge, a brutal communist regime that ruled Cambodia in the late 70s, and the resourcefulness of this young society. The average adult is 30 years old.

Engaging with new cultures broadens your perspective, encourages empathy, and enhances your ability to lead and inspire. By immersing myself in Cambodia’s vibrant entrepreneurial scene, I gained insights that will continue to shape my approach to international business. I look forward to further expanding SmallBizLady brand across the globe with www.smallbizladyacademy.com.

Many small business owners make the mistake of setting prices based primarily on what competitors are charging. While it’s important to understand what the market looks like and how competitors are pricing their offerings, focusing solely on competition may leave money on the table—or worse, lead to unprofitability.
