The S.M.A.R.T.© Approach to Emotional Intelligence -Part 4

5-part series. Presented over 5 weeks. Next post 12/14/2920

Today, we explore the R. Resilient: Able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult situations or conditions; spring back; flexible; adapting in the face of adversity, i.e., family, relationship, workplace, financial stressors.

Resilient people develop a mental capacity that allows them to adapt with ease during adversity, bending like willow instead of breaking like a mighty oak. Or, as Confucius once said, 'The green reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in a storm.'

It is said that Steven Spielberg, Academy Award-winning director of such films as Schindler's List, The Color Purple, E.T., The Extra-Terrestrial, Saving Private Ryan, was rejected both times he applied to attend film school at University of Southern California (USC). That didn’t stop him. Spielberg has grossed $8.5 billion from films he directed.

Rather than letting difficulties, traumatic events, or failure overcome them and drain their resolve, highly resilient people find a way to change course, emotionally heal, and continue moving toward their goals.
