Alumni Feature: Joe Apgar '08 FIN, ECON), Chief Operating Officer, Pelotonia
Joe is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Pelotonia in Columbus, Ohio, one of the largest event-based non-profits in America. The organization raises money for innovative cancer research and hosts an annual three-day experience of volunteerism and cycling in Columbus each August. Supporting research efforts at The James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Pelotonia has raised more than $200 million over the last decade. Joe oversees all day-to-day operations of the organization and helps to set the strategic vision for Pelotonia. In 2019, Joe played an integral role in leading Pelotonia to establish the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology at The Ohio State University. Set to be one of the world’s premier immunotherapy research institutions, Pelotonia provided a pledge of $102,265,000 (the largest gift in Ohio State history) to establish the institute. Joe was recently nominated as a member of the 40 under 40 class by Columbus Business First, a regional business publication. He originally moved to Columbus after his graduation from Penn State in 2008 to work at private equity firm Rockbridge Capital, one of the largest hotel investors in the real estate industry. Starting as an Analyst in June 2008 at the onset of the Global Financial Crisis proved to be an incredible learning experience as Joe transitioned to eventually lead all strategic initiatives for the organization during his tenure. Additionally, while at Rockbridge, Joe was a founding member of a social-enterprise conference for the hospitality industry, raising more than $500,000 annually for charity. Joe resides in Upper Arlington, Ohio, proudly wearing his Penn State colors at every opportunity, with his wife and 18-month old daughter. Joe’s career advice: Do what you think is right, every time, without exception. Trust your gut and stand firm in your values. Be vulnerable and open about your shortcomings and learn the power of asking for help and guidance. The only limits on your potential are the expectations you set for yourself, so set the bar high in everything you do and surround yourself with people who do the same.
