So, you think you know VFX?
When interviewing entry level candidates to work in VFX, I often ask them what they might foresee as the biggest challenge for them embarking on a career in this field. They might say the long hours in crunch, or getting to know the different people and roles they have within the company. Sometimes, they turn the question back on me and my reply is the same every time: getting to grips with the terminology and software. There are advances in VFX tech around the world every single day, there’s always a new way of doing things, a new system that improves efficiency, etc., so there's always something new to be learnt.
I’ve sometimes asked colleagues if they had attended a VFX event like SPARK FX before, and if not, I’ve asked 'why not?' I’ve sometimes had the response ‘I know how to do my job.’ Yes, you do (and extremely well I might add!) now, but what about tomorrow? What about on the other side of the world, are they making movies the same way we are? Did you watch the behind the scenes on how that movie was made? Did you read that article in Cinefex about that one-off production technique? Did you hear about the new software that’s cutting render time in half? Do you know what that company developed to make that amazing thing in that film that was AWESOME?! When you’re working full-time in VFX, it’s hard to keep up to date with all the changes in our fast-moving and endlessly innovative industry. But, events like SPARK FX are the download on the latest and greatest in VFX, to keep you fresh.
We have a fantastic line up of speakers and talks for SPARK FX 2020, starting Saturday 15th February [click here for more information], a Recruitment fair featuring the major studios from Vancouver and around the world [registration for this free event here], and a full day of workshops and talks on the latest tech innovations and software out there on the Sunday 16th February [further details also here].
