Soil Sampling Training in Ontario

Trainees with Greenbelt Foundation and the Ontario Soil Network learned soil sampling techniques from SHI Soil Scientist Dr. Jenny Bower recently, including hand-texturing soils and selecting sampling locations. The trip also included a visit to the Agriculture and Food Laboratory at the University of Guelph to see the lab's high-throughput setup to evaluate aggregate stability with the Slakes app.

Dr. Jenny Bower, an SHI Soil scientist, trains soil samplers from Ontario Greenbelt and the Ontario Soil Network how to characterize and sample soil in a 50-year old sweet cherry orchard in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Long-term orchards with no-till practices and continuous living roots are sampled through this project to represent the upper bound of soil health for a given soil type.
Adam Hayes, an agronomist with the Soil Resource Group, explains what to look for when selecting a site to sample. This area is deceptive as it looks similar to the rest of the orchard, but the upper two feet of topsoil were removed to build a railroad bridge decades ago. The samplers avoided this site because of its disturbance history to ensure they can compare soils formed through similar processes.
Soil sampler Maria Pot practices sampling bulk density in a peach orchard in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Bulk density is sampled from 0-15 and 15-30 cm to calculate organic carbon stocks for farmer soil health reports.
