Sollers Insights 2024: reader's top 3

In 2024, we published 12 issues of Sollers Insights – the insurance industry's newsletter. Which ones interested our readers the most? Which should be considered top 3 must-reads?

1. How can I help you? The next generation of chatbots has overcome childhood illnesses

Customer service chatbots in the insurance industry have improved significantly, with next-generation models now able to handle up to 97% of queries. Early versions of chatbots struggled with complex queries, often frustrating customers, but advances have addressed many of these issues. The insurance sector has embraced chatbots for their cost-saving benefits and ability to provide 24/7 customer support. However, to be effective, AI chatbots require ongoing training, careful tailoring of responses to different audiences and a focus on empathy in interactions. Ongoing monitoring and intervention are essential to ensure that chatbots perform accurately and safely. Chatbots also need to retain context from ongoing conversations and integrate data from other systems to provide comprehensive, personalised responses. Despite these advances, chatbots may still require human intervention for sensitive or complex cases.

2. Not another success story. How to handle IT projects

An IT project should be seen as a collaborative effort between development and business teams, with a shared perspective and common goals. Success is unlikely if management and business don't share the same understanding of the project's objectives. Furthermore, while developers may not fully understand business requirements, and business analysts may not understand the challenges facing developers, effective communication between the two is critical to success. Given resource constraints, the use of an external systems integrator can provide the necessary expertise and flexibility, particularly when temporary staff or specialist skills are required. Effective governance is essential, with senior management involvement sending a strong message about the importance of the project, boosting morale and ensuring accountability. Customisation of IT systems, although risky, can be essential where there are significant business needs that cannot be met by off-the-shelf solutions. However, customisation should always be carefully evaluated, considering both the immediate benefits and the long-term maintenance costs, to ensure that it adds value without unnecessary complications.

3. Predictions for 2025: Window of Opportunity

In 2025, insurers will capitalise on the opportunities presented by an improving economy, focusing on data, cloud and AI to enhance their capabilities. Pricing will be a key focus, with insurers benefiting from a positive environment and less challenging NatCat conditions compared to 2024. Rate increases are expected to address claims inflation, NatCat losses and high reinsurance costs, while investment income will continue to thrive due to higher interest rates. Climate change and natural catastrophe risks remain significant, although La Niña may mitigate some effects. IT investment in the insurance industry will remain high, driven by innovation and technology, with a particular focus on data management and automation to support underwriting, pricing and the introduction of AI. Cloud computing will play a central role in improving data management, with insurers increasingly relying on cloud technology, particularly in regions such as the UK, Australia and the US. AI, particularly GenAI, will continue to grow in importance, improving document management, customer service, fraud detection, and overall efficiency, with automation and digital self-service expanding across various markets.
