SOMETIMES YOU SHOULD STOP TRYING TO SUCCEED

SOMETIMES YOU SHOULD STOP TRYING TO SUCCEED

Shower thoughts.

Can you recall a moment when you were in the shower and then the exact idea you were hoping to discover pops into your head?

Aren't they powerful!

This happened to me recently as I was trying to come up with my third key point for keynote I was soon delivering.

I had spent nearly three days trying to find alignment with what my clients objectives were and personalize my story to help them.

After ruminating through countless ideas and nothing "feeling right", I gave up with just the weekend left to prepare before my event.

Letting Go

I remember experiencing this in the past, that when we "let go", we create space for something new to arrive.

As I was in the shower the next morning, I tried my very best to "let go".

My mind wanted to keep trying to figure out the answer, but I did everything I could to just let go, stop trying, and let my head run under the water in silence.

I was exhausted, tired, not looking forward to my day, and then all of a sudden...

"BOOM! I'VE GOT IT!"

Like a gum-ball machine filled with 16 different ideas (or colours), it was as if I had just spent three days trying to fill the machine (my mind) with ideas, and then when I put the quarter in (when I "let go"), it was as if I had finally created the space for the one idea I needed to fall through the crack!

Consider the model below.

At the top of the funnel you are doing everything you can to come up with your solution. You are asking for feedback, gathering ideas, researching, and brainstorming everything you can!

Then at some point, you decide to "let go". You go for a drive. You go for a walk. You garden (one of my absolute favourite things to do, nowadays!).

You decide to step back and stop trying to "force" your answer to arrive.

Instead you "let go", and just like that gum-ball machine... BOOM!

The idea drops into your mind and you suddenly find what you are looking for.

Putting It Into Practice

Now, look...

I am not going to sit here and say this is the cure to solve all your problems.

If, during your next brainstorming session, you decide to stand up and say "Hey gang! I am going to take off and go for a walk. I think I can come up with better ideas on my own.", that's not going to land well!

However, as you know, I love helping people shift their mindset to think differently about the problems they are facing.

What I am suggesting here is that you find yourself running up against a wall, take a minute to stop trying to succeed.

Stop trying to force things to happen.

Instead, step back and try to "let go".

When we have these moments of success, it starts to feel like magic!

My passion is helping people shift their mindset through my keynotes, workshops, and 1:1 coaching to drive results and embrace change.

This is the gift of intentional relaxation and rest isn't it? It does take a bit of faith in the face of the fear of letting go, but 100%, I too would recommend letting go and being open to see what comes your way!
