[Soul Sunday] Say Amen!

Happy Soul Sunday..... 

Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the LORD.” 1 Chronicles 16:36

Ezra said, “Praise the Lord, the great God!” All the people raised their arms in the air and answered, “Amen! Amen!” They knelt in worship, with their faces to the ground. (Nehemiah 8:6 GNT)

Earlier last week, I was reaching out to contractors to do some miscellaneous work on our house in Ohio, now a rental. I was sincerely surprised when Burt, a mason contractor (specializing in brick work) asked me, “do you know the meaning of Amen?'' Surprised but - I am not one of those ministers or Christians who needs to proclaim to know everything. So, I immediately responded, no tell me. He gave me his explanation and really began to preach to me. Wow-what a blessed surprise. 

One, he caught me off guard and two, I did not expect a biblical lesson from Burt. Bu, here’s the thing, as my mentor and mother in the faith always said, “everything is preachable!” 

 Let’s focus on the meaning of Amen!

When was the last time you gave thought to the final word in most of your prayers?

For us who call Jesus our Lord and Savior, our prayers are distinctive in the way they end. We often, if not always, end them the same way—with an “Amen.” It’s like an audible full stop, especially if we’re gathered with others to pray. The “Amen” tells everyone that we’ve come to the end of the prayer! Yet, the “Amen” means so much more than just a punctuation or tag to end our prayers.

 What does the dictionary say? Amen is commonly used after a prayer, creed, or other formal statement. It is spoken to express solemn ratification or agreement. It is used adverbially to mean “certainly,” “it is so,” or “so it be.” Amen can be used in formal prayers within a prescribed script. But it is also used to punctuate personal prayers as well.

 Biblically, “amen” is related to the Hebrew adjective that means, “true, trustworthy, faithful.” When you say “Amen,” you’re saying, “That’s the truth.”

Jesus is the Amen. Jesus is reliable, trustworthy, faithful. He was 100% faithful in his love for you. He was 100% faithful in his desire to save you from all your sins. He is 100% trustworthy to forgive you, love you, and be with you now. He is 100% truly your Savior from all sin and from death itself. Jesus is the Amen. He is the final true Word on the matter. God loves you and forgives you in Jesus. Amen. End of story. 

The truth. The Amen. The final word. All this comes together in the last book of the Bible, when Jesus is called, “The Amen” (Revelation 3:14).

We Declare ‘Amen!’ to the Glory of God!!

Hey, saying “Amen” shouldn’t be just a ritual. It’s an opportunity to exercise and express our faith. It is an opportunity to say to the Father, “Surely, because of Jesus, let this blessing I’m asking for, let this promise from the Word I’m hearing about, be unto me for Your glory.” When you have such a revelation of this word, every “Amen” you say ascends to the Father as praise, carrying the sweet savor of your deepest heartfelt appreciation of His Son’s (Jesus’) work at the cross for us.

Beloved, Christ paid with His life at the cross to give us every one of these blessings, He saying to us, “Yes!” regarding each blessing, and it is our privilege to say, “Amen!” in response!

So speak your “Amen” today with revelation and understanding, and see God’s promises come to pass in your life!
