Speaker welcomes staff who have Down's Syndrome to Parliament

The House of Commons has recruited six members of staff who have Down’s Syndrome in a move the Speaker has described as ‘long overdue’.

The group who will work in catering and service delivery positions within Parliament, were put forward by WorkFit, the Down’s Syndrome Association’s employment programme.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle welcomed the new recruits during an event to mark Disability History Month at Speaker’s House on Wednesday, 22 November.

‘I am so excited that we are being joined by six incredibly talented individuals, who have so much to offer Parliament,’ Sir Lindsay said.

‘I have already heard from the catering team what a difference they are making. To my mind their appointment is long overdue.’

Henny Beaumont, mother of Beth Beaumont Epstein, 22, who will be working as a kitchen steward in Portcullis House, said: ‘Beth already has three years training in catering, but this will be her first job and she is very excited.

‘It makes her feel like she is being taken seriously and that people are seeing her and her abilities. She’s got a huge amount to offer, and I know the experience of working with Beth will be rewarding for all involved.’

There are normal people who need jobs.

Dont forget to encourage all disabilities equally. It needs to be to all levels of Civil Service too across the uk. At least the Speaker is being disabled friendly unlike the Conservative Party..

Awesome Lindsay! Everyone welcome! Everyone has way more ability than they themselves recognise.

How wonderful. I didn't know that this was in planning. I'd have loved to have met them and had some input whilst I was working there. Parliament certainly needs to set a better example of employment for people with disabilities, especially those with learning disabilities. I wish the new recruits all the best and hope that they are supported by Parliament to reach their full potential in all aspects of the House business.
