Special Edition: How much could the 2024 election change our education system?

How well is your organization prepared for a shift in federal funds? How about a change in state education policy? The upcoming election could have significant effects on your work --and still there is a lot we don’t know know. What we do know: Education leaders are both nervous about the election and may not yet have received the right information to prepare. Anxiety could be outpacing understanding.

To address this knowledge gap, we are publishing a 2024 Election Analysis to help education leaders understand the likely impacts of the election on education policy and how they can start preparing for it. This thorough analysis details the proposed policies and potential scenarios of a Vice President Harris or President Trump Administration, along with predictions on House and Senate control and Project 2025. The analysis also provides insight into key gubernatorial races and recent Court cases.

There are a range of possible outcomes for this election–a divided government with both parties sharing power or either party controlling the executive and legislative branches. Our advice–don’t wait until November to start planning. It is in an organization’s best interest to act now and prepare for the different scenarios.

What should you do next?

Start by reading our overview of the 2024 election. Secondly, review our comprehensive Election Analysis and have your organization follow these steps:

  1. Determine how your work could change–Assess the implications upstream, downstream and within.
  2. Develop a contingency plan–Prepare a "Red Folder" and "Blue Folder" with action plans tailored to the outcomes of either a Republican or Democratic win.
  3. Decide to play offense or defense–Consider taking proactive steps to fight unwanted changes or diversity your strategies and funding sources.

Impact on Philanthropic Partners

Earlier this week, foundation leaders convened as part of our Funder Dialogue Series. We walked attendees through a 2024 Election Analysis tailored for funders and two D.C. insiders enlightened us on how they see education philanthropy impacted by the election–both at a national and state level. If you are a funder and would like to be included on invitations to future dialogues, let us know.

Regardless of the election outcome, Education First is here to help education leaders navigate this time of change. If you are looking for a thought partner, a high-level risk assessment or a contingency plan tailored to your organization, let us know by clicking here.
