Special Issue | World Toilet Day
Note from Erin McCusker, Senior Vice President, Leader, SATO and LIXIL Public Partners, LIXIL
World Toilet Day is almost here and the countdown to 2030 – the date for meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all - continues with greater urgency.
Amid COP27 climate discussions, increasing attention is on innovation, resilience, and adaptation. How do we accelerate our progress to meet the ambitious goals of SDG6? We change the way we work.
Today, we are excited to announce the launch of our first partnership with FINISH Mondial, leveraging finance to bridge the affordability gap for consumers and businesses and scaling access to safely managed sanitation systems in Africa and Asia. More on this is below.
SATO has a unique partnership model, working with cross-industry stakeholders to tackle the barriers to improved sanitation and hygiene by looking at new business models and product innovations. Many of SATO’s strategic partners were featured at the recent UNC Water Conference, highlighting how market-based sanitation approaches can accelerate and sustain access to safely managed sanitation.
At UNC, UNICEF launched its Game Plan for Safely Managed Sanitation, calling for multi-stakeholder collaborations to deliver fast results in safely managed sanitation. USAID, after rigorous examination of the learnings from many of its projects, including those led by PSI, kicked off the updated Global Water Strategy, raising its goal to now improve sanitation for 22 million people over the next five years.
There’s more to come! Our expanded SATO portfolio will become available in Africa as well as our first-ever market, Bangladesh. We invite you to join us and see these products for yourself at the World Toilet Summit in Nigeria (details below) and also to register for the next edition of Customer Talks that will take place at the end of the month and focused on the importance of school sanitation.
These events provide us with unique opportunities to discuss innovative solutions that we, as a private business, can help bring to market swiftly and effectively – and meet the value and quality demanded by our customers.
There are only eight more World Toilet Days until 2030. What are you going to do to ensure that we build momentum and impact on each future Day?
Erin

EXPANDING OUR PRODUCT RANGE IN BANGLADESH
Since first launching in Bangladesh in 2013, we have helped create a better life, every day, for consumers through our first innovative sanitation solution – the SATO Pan. We are pleased to expand our product range available with our manufacturing partner RFL to now include our twin-outlet V-Trap connection systems and the SATO Tap.
When combined with our award-winning toilet pans, the SATO V-trap allows easy and reliable construction of offset twin-pit latrines – enabling safely managed sanitation while minimising odours and flies, and creating a more pleasant and sustainable experience for consumers.
This is the next step in expanding our offer to our partners and consumers in a country that leads the way in demanding more user-friendly and sophisticated sanitation solutions.

SUPPORTING USAID’S WATER STRATEGY AND UNICEF’S GAME PLAN
In recent weeks, we have joined our partners as they celebrate the launch of some significant initiatives. In late October at UNC’s 2022 Water and Health Conference, our partner UNICEF shared its Game Plan to Reach Safely Managed Sanitation – a crucial strategy to address the 3.6 billion people who lack safely managed sanitation. Through our shared-value partnership, Make a Splash!, and all of our work and collaborations with UNICEF, we are proud to support the Game Plan, helping scale access to our products while driving innovation within the sector to achieve affordable and inclusive sanitation for all.
Meanwhile, our partner USAID – alongside the US Government - unveiled its new five-year Global Water Strategy. Through its strategy, USAID aims to impact 22 million people with improved sanitation. LIXIL and SATO will be key partners in this effort, working to reach 2 million people alongside USAID as we expand access to toilets and handwashing solutions through our cooperative agreement, The Partnership for Better Living.
