Spooky Messaging (the five scariest things about your employees using unmonitored messaging apps for work)
Are your employees using unmonitored messaging apps for business purposes?
Does it send shivers down your spine?
Well...maybe it should!
Here’s why it’s scary:
1. COMPLIANCE
“Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door"
In some industries, record-keeping regulations require all client conversations to be archived.
If you’re a financial institution, for example, and your employees use messaging applications that are unmonitored, regulators can, and likely will, come tapping at your chamber door sooner or later.
And if you’re not well-prepared, the trick-or-treating can cost you a fine as high as $200 million dollars.
And no, you can't ghost them.
2. PRIVACY
An absolute privacy nightmare!
Data privacy is king. It can no longer be compromised in any industry. Agree?
Now close your eyes and imagine your employees messaging clients. They are creating a privacy nightmare.
You have no way of tracking consent, opt-in, and unsubscribing.
What's worse, your client's personal details may be sitting on a personal phone, far out of your control.
Oh, and if the regulator comes knocking (see #1 above), good luck weeding through your employee’s personal (and private) chats and business chats.
What a nightmare…
3. SECURITY
Recommended by LinkedIn
No place is safe....
Your security team has spent so much time and resources to protect valuable company infrastructure and data from outside threats such as dangerous viruses and malware.
All the while, your own employees may be exposing you to new risks by using unprotected channels.
Is no place safe? That’s chilling.
4. DATA LEAKAGE
Are those UFOs?!
Look up in the sky! See those Unidentified Foreign Objects?
Those are not UFOs but your company data floating around!
You see, even if you’ve implemented Data Leakage Prevention policies and control elsewhere, once your employees start using additional, shadow channels of communications, inevitably confidential or sensitive information will leave your organization without proper authorization.
Once this data starts floating around in space, it’s virtually impossible to bring it back, and the cost can be in the millions.
At that point, I’d much prefer extraterrestrial life!
5. CONTROL
Your headquarters just became a haunted house
You’ve spent years doing housekeeping. Kudos! Finally, every e-mail correspondence or phone call is connected to CRMs, automations, analytics, and many other systems and data flows. Conversations are even shared among team members, and the company remains in control.
Here’s the scary thing, though...Increasingly, it’s a haunted house!
More and more of these conversations are taking place elsewhere - on messaging apps. Your business productivity is decreasing as a result, and that’s nothing short of terrifying.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN
Believe us, we can go on. But you’re probably scared enough by now!
And yes, it's truly horrible. But don't fret. As the song goes:
“If there’s something weird and it don’t look good, who are you gonna call?"
No, don't call Ghostbusters.
