NEW! GMI Launches the Case Study Library

GMI developed the Case Study Library to share methane mitigation successes and lessons learned that provides access to over 130 case studies developed through GMI efforts over several years, including the Methane Action Showcase, the Policymaker Framework, and the Global Methane Challenge. New case studies will be added here as they become available.

Are YOU interested in sharing your country’s or organization’s methane mitigation best practices or lessons learned? We invite all GMI Partner Countries, Project Network Members, and Strategic Partners to fill out the online Case Study recommendation form to get your case study included in the library. Please note that these submissions are subject to review and must meet GMI requirements.

The Road to COP29: Baku Climate Action Week Focuses on Oil & Gas Sector

The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the COP29 Presidency hosted the Central-Asian Regional Technical Workshop “Turning Methane Pledges into Action” during Baku Climate Action Week in Azerbaijan, 30 September- 4 October 2024. Representatives from Kazakhstan, a GMI Partner Country since 2008, shared their commitment to taking swift action on methane in the oil and gas sector through their reporting and mitigation efforts as an Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 member, implementing a leak detection and repair program, and establishing potential near-term regulatory actions. A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) representative provided an overview of U.S. oil and gas policies and near-term opportunities to take methane mitigation action in this sector.

Tools and Resources

Project Network:

Calling all Project Network Members! Help Us Showcase Your Expertise to Partners and Funders

Given the increasing attention and funding focused on methane mitigation, we’re expanding our Project Network Find an Expert feature to include more details about the expertise our Project Network members have that can help Partners implement policies and projects. If you are a Project Network member, please refer to the personalized email sent by the Secretariat to you on 23 October 2024 and update your profile. We plan to draw attention to the website, including the Project Network, in the coming weeks and would love to ensure your expertise is accurately reflected.

Biogas:

SWEET is Now Available in Brazilian Portuguese

One of GMI’s most widely used tools, the Solid Waste Emissions Estimation Tool (SWEET), is now available in Brazilian Portuguese! The free Excel-based tool quantifies emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants from the municipal solid waste sector. Cities can use this information for multiple purposes, including establishing a baseline scenario, comparing a baseline scenario to as many as four alternative scenarios, analyzing specific projects for potential emissions reductions, estimating the contribution of activities in the waste sector to overall city emissions reduction goals, and tracking progress over time. SWEET is also currently available in French, Serbian, and Spanish. If you would like to see SWEET translated into your native language, please contact us at secretariat@globalmethane.org.

2024 International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) World Congress

The ISWA2024 World Congress in Cape Town, South Africa was held in September 2024 and featured presentations and panel discussions about opportunities to reduce methane emissions from the MSW sector, including several that profiled forthcoming GMI resources. U.S. EPA representatives gave presentations that showcased how a city in India turned around their waste management strategy, thereby dramatically reducing their methane emissions (GMI Indore case study); reviewed a new resource, the GMI Waste Characterization Handbook; and shared previews of new resources coming soon on financial readiness and biodigesters in India. Presentation materials from the conference are available on the GMI website.

Oil & Gas:

U.S. Pipeline Hazardous Materials and Safety Administration (PHMSA) Trainings on Pipeline Safety and Reducing Emissions from Pipelines

The U.S. PHMSA partnered with the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. EPA to provide technical trainings focused on reducing methane emissions from midstream and downstream oil and gas sources. Four training sessions were hosted by the U.S. PHMSA in 2024 that included 33 participants from 11 countries, totaling 1,000+ person-training hours. GMI Coal Mines Subcommittee Co-Chair, Volha Roshchanka, presented during the October training on behalf of the U.S. EPA.

The training courses covered various topics such as improving pipeline safety standards and enforcement mechanisms; deploying new technologies and services to improve safety, efficiency, and environmental protection; and training pipeline safety inspectors at PHMSA’s world class training facility in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States. Coal Mines:

GMI Basics of Coal Mine Methane Training: Now Available in Bahasa Indonesian

GMI's "Basics of Coal Mine Methane Training" course is now available in Bahasa Indonesian to complement the existing English and Spanish language versions. This interactive, online training can be downloaded from the GMI website.

This course is suitable for policymakers and other environmental experts who wish to gain a better technical understanding of how coal is extracted, sources of methane emissions from coal mines, methods for capturing methane from coal mines, and the beneficial uses of captured methane. The U.S. EPA, on behalf of GMI, translated the course as a contribution to the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), which aims to provide regional entities such as the Government of Indonesia a baseline understanding of methane generation and management in coal mines.

GMI Members Participate in UNECE Task Force on Methane Emissions Reduction from the Coal Mining Sector

GMI collaborates with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on the UNECE Task Force on Methane Emissions Reduction, chaired by GMI Coal Mines Subcommittee Co-Chair, Volha Roshchanka. The task force includes over 50 members from the GMI Project Network and UNECE Group of Experts of Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition, who are working together to disseminate information on methane emission reduction opportunities and to enable countries to collect better emissions data. The task force has held four working meetings so far. During the last meeting on 4 September 2024, the U.S. EPA team presented on the U.S. EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program requirements for the coal sector, including what data are collected from U.S. coal mines and how it is used to do a bottom-up estimate of emissions from this sector. Understanding the approach is useful for anyone looking to collect meaningful data on coal mine emissions. Coal Mine Methane Monitoring, Reporting, Verification and Mitigation Report: Now Available in Chinese

GMI’s Report “Best Practice Guidance for Effective Management of Coal Mine Methane at National Level: Monitoring, Reporting, Verification (MRV) and Mitigation” is now available in Chinese. This report aims to assist countries with designing national systems to quantify and report methane emissions from underground coal mines. National MRV programs have the potential to not only help countries better understand their emissions from coal mining, but also to identify opportunities for mitigation. In particular, MRV can help assess and track the effectiveness of adopted climate policies. During the recent climate negotiations, China expressed interested in improving emission information and MRV system for the coal sector, in particular as the government of China is exploring the potential to include coal sector emissions in its national emission trading scheme and to expand its regulation of the coal mining sector. The report can help inform decision-makers in China on options and considerations for developing a robust nation-level MRV for underground coal mines.

Case Studies

New! Watch how India's Cleanest City Reduces Methane Emissions from Municipal Solid Waste

GMI released an overview video to accompany the recently released case study on Indore’s waste management keys to success to reduce methane emissions. Indore, the largest city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India, has consistently ranked the “cleanest city in India” since 2017 in the Government of India’s annual cleanliness survey of over 4,400 cities. This video summarizes the factors that contributed to the successful transformation of Indore’s waste management system, including leadership buy-in, public engagement and participation, pilot testing, infrastructure upgrades, and innovative financing. Indore’s progress can serve as a model for cities around the world to improve solid waste management and reduce methane emissions and other climate pollutants.
