Spy scandals

Hello from the FT newsroom. Tension has flared up between Europe and China this week over trade suspicions and spy scandals.

Yesterday morning, Brussels used new powers to raid the European offices of Chinese company Nuctech, which manufactures luggage security scanners. The bloc is concerned that Beijing has used subsidies to distort the European market. Meanwhile, China claims the west is trying to suppress its industry and economy.

The raids follow a spate of arrests in Germany of people suspected to be spying for China, including a staffer of the far-right AfD party. German security services told the FT it is just the “tip of the iceberg” in terms of hostile undercover actors. You can read this story for free by downloading our FT Edit app.

My choices this week

  1. Warrington in northern England is — in many ways — quite far off from Monaco. So how did a hedge fund boss from the French Riviera get tied up with a hugely indebted English town?
  2. The US Senate this week finally approved a $95bn bill including funds for Ukraine and Israel — a big boost to President Joe Biden’s foreign policy record. The bill’s approval in the House marked a significant U-turn from Speaker Mike Johnson. We examined what made him change his mind.
  3. KPMG UK has revoked job offers to foreign graduates after the British government tightened visa rules this year, the FT has revealed. The move highlights how curtailed immigration has left the professional services industry under pressure.
  4. Over the hill at 35? Chinese tech employees are being dismissed on account of their age — in their thirties. In a sector where youth is rewarded, and companies are cutting headcount, many workers are feeling the anxiety of the “curse of 35”. (Free to read)
  5. The secrets of sleep — whether we get enough of it, why we need it, and how it affects us — are largely and remarkably unknown. But in Japan, one scientist has come close to finding revolutionary answers.
  6. Cowboy culture is back, it’s everywhere, and it’s miles more inclusive than it has ever been before. With its influence permeating the worlds of music, fashion and dance, HTSI takes a joyful trip to a queer line-dancing party in Brooklyn. (Free to read)

The concept of fair competition in int'l business has shifted, becoming increasingly intertwined with international political motives. While the WTO serves for dispute resolution, preemptive raids and criminalization of suspected areas indicate a departure from fair competition towards market capture through force. This undermines emerging economic powers and tarnishes reputations with unfounded criminal allegations, exposing a double standard where ethics are preached to developing nations but not applied to the powerful.

Blimey & it’s off again, a few weeks ago the EU accused China of flooding Europe with subsidised goods sold below market value. Then Scholz travelled to China a week back whilst it was heating up on questions over the trade practices of Beijing & their “closeness” to Moscow. Then the European Commission’s probe into Chinese suppliers of wind turbines, after investigations into electric cars, trains & state aid for solar panels! This is all surrounding recent calls with Macron & Scholz highlighting the urgency to increase European competitiveness where they’ve looked to deepen pan-European capital markets. TRADE WAR HAPPENING 🤯
