How to Figure Out Exactly What Your Dream Job, Career or Business Should Be

Finding a job, career or business you love is no easy task but it's definitely not impossible.

[1]: "Follow your bliss."

The first time I heard this advice was from a professor, midway through a lesson in my junior year of college. The idea was so romantic and enchanting, I repeated it like a mantra for months afterward … but I still couldn't figure out what my bliss was. I loved singing but was skeptical someone would pay me to do it. And I loved a lot of other things — politics, media, business, sports. Meanwhile, my granddad, who was chipping in for my education, had a dream that I attend law school, preferably at USF but no pressure.

After graduation, I was back living with my parents. I tanked the LSAT accidentally on purpose. I was lost, while all my friends seemed to be carpe diem-ing the shit out of post-college life.

Only now do I see that "follow your bliss" (and similar tropes like "do what you love" and "find your passion") is not the most useful advice. It oversimplifies a massively difficult challenge. Many recent grads are very conflicted about how to find work that inspires and satisfies them.

Yet career ambivalence is out of fashion. Girl-boss narratives and the burden of student debt have fed a new urgency to earn ASAP. Many recent graduates become despondent if they end up not liking the work they've chosen — and worse, they may stick with something they hate because they don't want to feel like a failure. We beat ourselves up for missteps when they are really just … steps. Understanding that it's challenging and messy is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself.

If you're reading this and you haven't found your dream job, career or business yet, cut yourself some slack. But do keep looking!

Some people may find that their true passion is something they do outside the office. Still, you'll likely spend one-third of your life at work, and everyone deserves a career or business that makes them happy. One that is financially viable, and maximizes their unique skills. Most successful people have not taken a linear path. One thing they have in common is curiosity. They constantly ask questions.

Start by questioning yourself.

What do you like? What are you good at? Write down all the things you do well — it could be house-cleaning, bookkeeping, throwing parties.  Circle the things that could earn you money, then star the circled things you are willing to do for money. Sometimes you will find superpowers you didn't know you had.

Take 30 minutes to research each position online.

Once you've drawn up a list of jobs that could tap your skills take 30 minutes to research each position online or tap your alumni network to interview someone who does that work. Ask them what the worst part of their job, career or business is.

Every career path comes with a certain amount of difficulty, but you can choose what that difficulty is. I started out thinking I might work at the CIA or the State Department because I loved the idea of solving weighty problems. But I realized bureaucracy is a type of pain I did not want to deal with. Whereas in the startup space, the pain is the pressure and the unpredictable hours, which don't bother me as much. Spend half an hour a day for two weeks and you'll have investigated 14 potential fields.

Focus on vocations — nurse, teacher, engineer — but also working conditions. Does the prospect of collaborating in teams, working in a small lab, dealing with the public, or schmoozing at a cocktail party make you feel excited or kinda homicidal?

How important is it that you have a short commute, opportunities to travel, diverse coworkers, prestige, or a cause you care about?

You can be doing something that you like and believe in, but if you have a schedule or a boss that isn't working for you, then you will be stressed.

Does the paycheck drive you?

There's no shame in that. Money-motivated people tend to be happier in their work than those who are mission-driven: They have clear benchmarks for success (plus, they probably have a beach house). That's not to say you shouldn't change the world, but being practical about your needs is OK.

What you prioritize in a job will ebb and flow. There's a time to make bank, a time to win a Nobel Prize, a time when you just want to be home to read your kids Good Night, Gorilla.

NO JOB, CAREER OR BUSINESS IS EVER A DEAD END

In any job, career or business, you can improve on what we call soft skills — writing, public speaking, negotiating, getting comfortable with technology — which are important but not always emphasized in school.

Improve your follow-through skills by writing things down in a meeting, not walking away until you know the next steps, and setting deadlines. Be that person who makes things happen. Being a reliable person will help you stand out in a very competitive environment.

Review what you did during the day

At the end of each day, review what you did. Ask yourself, What gave me energy? Think about those things that bring you joy and energy, and try to do more of those things, with whatever autonomy you have.

If your chosen field turns out to be an energy-suck, you can always change lanes. Young women feel so much pressure to be perfect. I think they feel it more than men do.

Have a plan

Have a plan for where you want to go, but the plan is not everything. If you get into something and it's not what you thought it would be, that's okay
