Startups develop Creative and Scalable Innovations to Fight NCDs in Brazil

It was a great pleasure to be a mentor at ArtemisiaLab, bringing, in two opportunities (July, 2019), multisectoral advice and perspectives from #CSOs, #academia and #philanthropy (#FórumDCNTs, @FórumDCNTs) to collaborate with #Artemisia and #AssociaçãoSamaritano, and especially with the brave entrepreneurs who are developing innovations to fight noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in Brazil.

We are so used to the many programs and products available that end up blind to the gaps or "still to develop" health technologies and health promotion/education strategies. During this opportunity I was truly amazed by the apps that predict your chances of developing #NCDs and softwares to calibrate diagnostic or therapeutic equipment, reducing costs for public hospitals or equipping community healthcare workers (#CHWs), in addition to new hardware that save lives and educational strategies that impact health/sickness and well-being, through reducing NCDs risk factors.

Some of the main lessons left for the mentees, but also for us all, are: a) make sure that you are solving a concrete problem/demand with your solution, and be able to speak/explain it with clarity; b) develop a lot of planning (business, marketing, etc.), testing, networking before and during bringing an innovation to market; c) make sure that you have a committed multidisciplinary team and right investors with you; d) be open/flexible for changes, adaptations, improvements, and unplanned partners/funders; e) never forget to respect basic and specific ethical norms to deploy product or service.
