Roadmap Step 1: The Alignment Accelerator

9-Step Roadmap: Step 1, The Alignment Accelerator

Over the many years I’ve worked with business owners I’ve found that if they don't get this step right whilst building their business, then the business rarely provides them with the lifestyle or exit strategy they were hoping for.

Building a business and getting to the point of exit can sometimes be a bit like climbing a ladder only to find that when you reach the top it was leaning against the wrong wall!

The Alignment Accelerator ensures that when you exit your business you do so with the lifestyle you hoped and planned for.

It involves defining your personal goals and making sure your business goals are aligned with your personal goals.

Which Wall Is Your Ladder Leaning Against?

Many business owners have personal goals, for example paying off the mortgage, “toys” (fancy cars, etc.), world trips, financial investments, pension pots, looking after family, etc.

Most expect their business to pay for these goals when they exit the business, for example retiring or selling the business.

However, I have rarely met a business owner who has crystal clear clarity on how their business needs to grow and develop in order to achieve these goals.

They are often just working hard, and hoping …

Dream, Learn, Plan, Act.

Sometimes Business Owners Say To Me ...

Business Owner: “My business is my pension” 😊

Me: “Brilliant, can I ask a few questions, please?

  • When are you looking to retire? (Date)
  • How much income do you need to retire and give you the lifestyle you want? (Exact financial number)
  • Are you looking to sell and exit, or have your business running without you and still providing you with an income? (Exit model)
  • If you want to sell, how much do you need to sell it for?  (Valuation figure)
  • How long do think it will take you to exit? (Work-out time)
  • If you want your business to run without you who will run your business while you‘re not there? (Team planning)
  • Whichever of the above models you choose, what does the “value” of the business need to be, and what do the revenue, the net profit, the team, the systems, etc. need to look like? (Business plan)

Business Owner: “???”

I don’t actually fire all these questions at them in one go, that wouldn’t be very nice.

But these are the kinds of details that we need to explore so that the “Business Goals” are “Aligned” with the “Personal Goals”.

Step 1, The Alignment Accelerator - The 3 Pillars - The 5 Levels of Business Owner

This is what Step 1 of the Roadmap, The Alignment Accelerator, does for you....

"It Aligns Your Business Goals With Your Personal Goals"

Once you have aligned your business goals with your personal goals, they become far more meaningful, emotionally engaging, and real. They are not just “numbers”.

Now you have specific 10, 5, 3, 1 year business goals you can build a robust business plan to achieve them.

And, as you progress through your business plan you can track your progress as you achieve your business goals, and your personal goals, and move closer to your long-term ideal lifestyle.

Along the journey, your business will become far more purposeful, rewarding, and enjoyable.

Something I Learned Recently:

I was talking to a client of mine recently who has built an incredibly successful business that now provides him with his ideal lifestyle.

During our conversation, he said to me:

“You know John, you only need two things in life to be happy:

1)     Enough money to do the things you want to do with the people you want to do them with

2)     Enough time to do them.”

I like that advice. 😊
